eBay no longer worth it for selling low dollar items.

I bought a Pioneer reel to reel tape player a number of years ago. The guy threw in a box of metal 10 inch take up reels. I have no use for them and ran across them again just the other day. Each reel comes in its own sturdy cardboard slide in mailing box. So I thought I might sell them individually on eBay. I look at some others and post mine for just a bit more as mine are in as new condition. $25. I figured five dollars for mailing them out USPS media and I profit $20. But no! Turns out eBay charges me $4.10 for a transaction fee. So now, my profit is down to $15. Hardly worth the effort of making the trip to the post office.

I’m going to post the rest of them on Facebook marketplace and see if there is any interest. I liked using eBay in the past as you got nationwide attention.

Rant over.

Yes, a couple weeks ago I sold a cassette recorder for $45. Ended up with $29 and change. Bought it in the 70s for maybe $100 but Its just been taking up space for 25 years so there is that.

It's been a long time since I sold anything on ebay. I just looked and I have 435 rating reviews.

I like it for buying yet...but hardly ever use it. Amazon is easier and faster.

I bought a lot of stuff off Ebay a couple of decades+ ago. Since then I tried buyiing and bought a couple of things. I've since given up. My last experience some years ago seemed like everything was skewed in favor of the sellers. I wasn't aware they're charging a transaction fee now. More reasons not to use it.

I threw items in the trash instead of eBay. By the time all was said and done, I got half of what the item sold for. Then there's the hassle of shipping. No mas.

Pretty sure you won't get a 1099 from FB Marketplace. You will from eBay/Paypal

100% echoing some of you.. I'll never sell there again.. I am honest to a fault when I sell something and I still got $%$#%...
That was old/rare used tennis racquets you cannot find anymore. Paid $$ for good shipping, on me, just to be safe, on something that was worth peanuts..
Upon reception, Got all sorts of BS on grip size (per factory), and the guy peeled off the original leather grip too to make his point, and wanted me to take back damaged racquets, pay for that return shipping, deal with ebay dispute, total waste of my time and a profit that would not even buy you a burger. Ebay was 100% unhelpful and defaults to buyer protection even when totally unjustified, they'll aslo take the money back like greased lightning.. It was easier to eat it and take the scam-buyer offer of 50% off which was similar to paying for shipping back... zero $ in the end, and bad feeling re: buyer, not even able to torch him or you lose your rating (for whatever that is worth, since I'll never use them again)... I no longer even buy there. I cannot imagine that BS on anything of real value, vs this experience which was closet cleaning + free aggravation...

I sold quite a bit last year. Around $6000 worth. I always figure 20% for ebay. Not exact but a safe number to think about when pricing. I only sell stuff on ebay that will not sell locally on FB Marketplace. Pretty much out of junk to sell right now.

I’ve only bought a handful of items on eBay, and never sold anything, that I recall.

I’ve bought lots of things and sold a small amount and only had two minor issues.

Love it or hate it, your item will reach the most people and even with the fees, will probably get you more than a local pick up sale.

Also there are lots of obscure items for sale that you would have to search “forever” on a local site to find.

Only about 10% of ebay’s selling volume is collectibles and items. It has become a place for commercial vendors selling mostly new, sometimes overstock or refurbished, things.

I still buy stuff there - used auto parts etc.

Agree. I've sold stuff there that might not have sold elsewhere. They provide a worldwide platform. It's worth something. Not to say the haircut doesn't hurt.

I saved money and sanity by getting a big dumpster.

I'm not dealing with any kind of Internet shopper. They have the upper hand.

Trash or recycling center for me

eBay isn't worth the time, hassle, and money.
We are downsizing big time, so a lot of stuff to get rid of. I started a thread he for "shipping only" where we could send stuff to fellow Pelicans for the cost of shipping. It didn't go over big. We put things up on Facebook Marketing, the local buy&sell FB page, and ReHome or send it to the dumpster.
