A Reminder if Planning a Flight

Just returned from a week in FL. When entering the security area at PIE, there was a woman in the line next to mine that was getting a lecture about her ID.
She didn't have the Real ID and they were letting her through...but not without explaining to her what she needed to do. It goes into effect in 15 days.

Arizona_928 04-21-2025 02:53 PM

lol lecturing?

I would have told them where to shove that lecture.

My nephew flew with a harmonica in his backpack. TSA had no idea wtf it was. Was comical watching them all take turns looking it over as if it was a gun part… finally a guy from behind the desk ended that Neanderthal circle.

stevej37 04-21-2025 02:57 PM

The guy was being very calm about it....just trying to avoid her getting turned back next time.
It's prob not a fun job.

My nephew worked TSA for about a year....he said McD's would have been better. :)
(thousands standing around)

Riiiight. So, you’ve got your RealID, yeah? I mean, if one supports an ID to vote, seems a no brainer for flying.

There’s always the bus or train. Or, just use a passport.

Personally, I don’t want the pre 9/11 lack of flight security.

Federal id card(s). Tsa are still ignorant as they do not know what they can and cannot accept.

P.s. i decline the facial scanner.

P.s.s. Those who sacrifice freedom for safety…

When we landed in Toronto on our way back from France, we had to clear customs then go through security to catch our flight back to Nova Scotia. As my wife's bag went through the x ray, the guy called his supervisor over to consult. The supervisor got my wife front and center and went through the "did you pack this bag?" routine. They opened the bag, dug down and came up with...a pair of maracas she had bought for our granddaughter.
We still have a chuckle over that from time to time.

Best
Les

I’m all for the Real ID, I’ve had one for years. For anything important (voting?) we should have to show a meaningful ID. TSA are sadly the mall cops of law enforcement, it’s mostly idiot theatre.

berettafan 04-21-2025 04:44 PM

say what? what's a real id? we need one to fly? drivers licenses have been cheapened by the states to the point they aren't good enough?

stevej37 04-21-2025 05:07 PM

It costs a few bucks more than a regular license. I've had mine for about 3 years now.

"A Real ID is a federally compliant driver's license or state-issued ID that meets enhanced security standards and is required for boarding domestic flights and accessing certain federal facilities. Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers will need a Real ID or another acceptable form of identification for these purposes. In Michigan, a Real ID is indicated by a gold star on the driver's license or ID."

onewhippedpuppy 04-21-2025 06:16 PM

It’s pretty rough, I think you have to show up with your birth certificate and social security card. Or passport.

Considering that some states give a DL to illegal aliens. When your friendly local TdA gang member has a DL and some politicians are fighting for their rights to stay in the USA. So yeah, the DL is worthless.

Rules for thee and all that,,,, Why do you think your Fed ID (CAC, PIV, whatever) is any less onerous or ‘invasive’ than a RealID?? Or in other words somehow more “free”?

I’m sure that despite all your boasting, you’d be silent as a church mouse in the TSA line. I mean why risk that Fed ID card? Bad look.

I almost passed out when I got mine,,

stealthn 04-21-2025 09:21 PM

Does it track you or something? What makes it more secure?

The man at the desk of the line took my Real ID and placed it face down on a small reader screen. He had a facial scanner that I had to look at, and then his main screen compared the two and told me to go thru.

Funny thing is that I had my boarding pass on my cell ready...he said he didn't need that. The only time that was used was at the jet-port when loading.

False. If you refuse the facial scanner, they scan the boarding pass and compare to your id.

The more you know.

stevej37 04-22-2025 03:36 AM

^^^
Why would anyone refuse a facial scanner, unless they were a known problem?

onewhippedpuppy 04-22-2025 03:53 AM

I love people who are active on social media refusing the facial scanner. Facebook had that data years ago, sorry!

stevej37 04-22-2025 04:00 AM

^^^ I think a pic is required in every state for a driver's licence.
I feel better with my pic on file...one more thing to help keep me out of trouble.:)

porsche tech 04-22-2025 05:06 AM

I think my license just came with a gold star without any extra proof of anything. Maybe cuz I’m a goody two shoes. Did have to show my DD214 to get Veteran on it.

jhynesrockmtn 04-22-2025 06:12 AM

I have had my real ID drivers license for a few years. My wife doesn't yet. I also have a passport card in addition to my passport and have carried that as a backup ID in the US when flying. She looked it up and that card does not work for air travel. Wtf? I thought the passport card worked as an alternative to your passport between US, Mexico and Canada. But apparently only for travel by land and sea. I have been telling my wife ti get the updated drivers license for a while. Guess she will now have to actually do it. And I will need to carry my full passport on every trip.

no idea, global entry is so smooth now, I don't even need my passport when returning to US. If you have a license or passport, big gov already has your picture anyway.

Maryland DL has been RealID compliant for a few years. You should be good.

URY914 04-22-2025 09:50 AM

DL, passport, DNA sample and surrendering first born coming next.

As in everyone's DL is a Real ID? Here, in MI, they give you a choice. Some older people plan on never flying again. A reg. DL is cheaper.

I have a real ID, TSA Precheck, Global Entry, CAC, and a security clearance. Not many secrets between me and Uncle Sam.

I've renewed my TSA Precheck once...they last 5 years. I'm a year away from the next renewal...not sure if I will do it again.
So many using it that the lines are almost equal...plus it costs $70

I applied for global entry a couple months ago and I’m still waiting for the next step….

Does your DL not have your photo on it? Do you not think you’re on camera from the moment you set foot on airport property.

There’s probably a 10 year old hacker that can find your first tax return.

The concern shouldn’t be giving up that information but rather focusing on what people that have it can do with it.

The lines vary greatly by airport in my experience. In some airports, it’s a lifesaver.

I dont understand the big deal with Real ID. I renewed my license and it came back as a real ID. All i had to do was confirm no address change or organ donor status (like on any prior renewal).

At least here in free Florida is a non issue.

Kids in college will have issues with fake IDs ....

As to facial recognition, your face was most certainly already digitized when they processed your DL, passport etc or just from security cameras.

masraum 04-23-2025 07:05 AM

Texas is one of those states where the only option for ID is Real ID. When you renew your DL or request a new one, you get a Real ID (and I think that's been in place for ~5 years). That certainly simplifies stuff for us.

Same here. It’s worth the money.

stevej37 04-23-2025 12:14 PM

Yeah...I will most likely renew the Precheck again.

The last two times I've flown...been lucky to get jets that load and unload with the front and rear door.
Makes a big difference in time...goes a lot smoother. I wish they would all do that.

I don’t trust the tsa database. Watching a recently married pregnant chick become flagged and not allowed through security because her picture in the database not matching the ID… wait, i thought they purged the pictures after they’re taken?… hmm

stevej37 04-23-2025 04:57 PM

It was very empty in the TSA line and as I was loading the plastic tray with my stuff, the guy asked if I had any metal on me. I answered "just in me...a rod from hip to knee" He directed me over to a different detector and I went thru and then they wanded me after I walked thru.

I've had that titanium rod inside my femur bone for over 7 years now and this was the first time they did that. And I fly about 7-10 rt's a year.

Arizona_928 04-23-2025 05:25 PM

Ti and steel in my spine and never set off the metal detector.

The millimeter scanner is an interesting tool. Complete mapping of a body plus internal. Radiation isn’t cool either. Yeah. Touch me in the closed room mr. tsa wanna be super soldier, i refuse the scanner.

Coming back from Mexico with our 16yo daughter and her friend a few years ago, we got similarly hung up.

Her passport was already nearly 5 years old so the computer rejected the picture on her passport of an 11yo child as a match for the young woman she now was.

We got sent to a room waiting for a supervisor’s review. It went up the chain of uniforms until the head guy in a suit was called over. His solution was to ask her if she had any photos on her phone from when she was 11. Really? Asking a modern day, attractive young woman if she has any selfies?

She scrolled through her phone and showed some pics from that time frame. He checked the date stamp and signed off on her entry.

Of course we had missed our connecting flight but that was just one of the many obstacles thrown at us on that trip.

It was the only time I’d bought trip insurance and good thing too. I filed a $2500 claim on that one.
