Kidney Tumor

They found a small tumor in my right kidney incidentally when I had a MRI Enterography for my Crohn's. It has penetrated the wall of the kidney and has a blood supply.

I have an appointment next week with a urological oncologist surgeon. I know it's pretty common. Anyone here go through surgery for this? It's going to screw up my summer!

Discuss using a robot if surgery is indicated and also discuss your surgeon's (again, if surgery is indicated) proficiency with your surgery. It's an unfortunate truth that like everything else, not everyone is good or even mediocre at their profession. Good luck!

The doctor I am seeing uses the DaVinci robot, for laparoscopic surgery. He is at Weill Cornell in Manhattan . I'm praying that that is the technique they would use. I really don't want to be sliced open. Thanks

Be glad you have two of them

It having its own blood supply is not good.

Going to see the doctor for the first time next Thursday. My gastro doctor gave me the results and referral.

primary renal carcinomas are well vascularized even before they are visible by any imaging technique. this is not a bad or a good prognostic factor. its just a fact.... there are so many blood vessels in kidneys it happens very early. occurring outside the capsule is another story, but overall renal ca is quite treatable and is rarely metastatic. hope you are a candidate for robotic surgery. best wishes

There are benign and malignant renal neoplasms.
The vast majority of small renal malignancies do well after treatment.
Depending on exact position and vascular supply- they may be able to do a partial nephrectomy, although even small lesions sometimes need a complete renal resection.
Find a good doctor, and trust them- not a bunch of bozo's on the internet.
Yes, I am an MD-- I stage these lesions all the time. The vast majority do fine.

I lost a kidney (radical nephrectomy) to cancer a few years ago. Subsequent scans have all been clear. My Dr. used robotics in the procedure. Best of luck!

My MIL had a grapefruit size tumor cut off a kidney. Don't know the type. It was a biggun. She is cancer free and has been for many years. Made something terrifying look like a walk in the park.

Let's hope you have a similar outcome.

Hope things turn out OK.
Yes, find a good doctor. Also, we Bozos on the internet are a good source of support and a good sounding board, so don't discount us completely.

Thanks to all. I have gotten over the initial shock and look forward to getting repairs done. The biggest worry I have is that I have a clotting disorder (on blood thinner) and I always develop clots after surgery. At 70 yo I am concerned with the recovery.

Shaun, still have to get that beer we talked about

Cheers

They’ll bridge your anticoagulation. It’s good to be your own advocate but every one you encounter in a hospital or clinic is getting paid to worry about you. Best to leave that job to them.
