A taste of the 70s

One of my fond childhood memories was going to McDonald's with my grandparents in the 70s, my mom and dad would never take us. Back then the fries were amazing as were the hot apple pies. Sadly, the modern day versions are pretty lame, like everything is now. It was some time in 1992 that McDonald's switched to the version of apple pie sold today.

But a little while ago I learned that there is a place on Earth that still makes apple pies like they did in the 70s and 80s, deep fried. That place is considered a paradise by many, Hawaii. Yes, Hawaii, and a few other places around the world, you can get old school apple pie goodness.

There are a few Pelicans living in HI, one being our very own WPOZZZ, Bryan. I asked him if he was game to get me 10 of these devils and send them to me, happy to pay for everything and then some.

Box arrived Yesterday. First, we all know what a great community we have here and people like Bryan really make it what it is. Not only did he go out of his way to get the pies and then ship them, he added in some Hawaiian cookies and coffee. And when asked for his paypal address to send $, he just replied "enjoy." At least I have his return address on the box.

And without further adieu, here are my first two pies. With fresh peanut oil and tallow (cow fat) I deep fried them as God intended. They were AMAZING and instantly transported me back to Middletown, CT in the 70s. Some memories of sitting with my grandparents and brother and sister flooded in. And to make it a truly authentic experience, I slightly burned my mouth carefully biting into one of the piping hot (375º) halves, just for old time's sake. Thank you Bryan!

I can't believe most McD's pies are baked. When we had the baked ones, I didn't eat them. lol However, we also have seasonal pies like taro and pineapple.

I've posted before about my family's background in Langendorf Bakeries. They had the Mickey's Fruit pies, similar to Hostess in the waxy paper wrapper.

Boy, you microwave one of this babies with some vanilla ice cream on top and you've got yerself a dessert!

I grew up a couple doors down from Vic and Eva Martino in the 60's and 70's. They owned Martinos Bakery in Burbank famous for Tea Cakes, Donuts, Fritters, Apple and Cherry turnovers and all sorts of mouth watering desserts. If Vic or Eva was out front of the home and saw a kid on the sidewalk or riding a bicycle they would stop you and send you home with a care package no charge. They owned the bakery from 1926 thru 1981 when they retired and Campbells Soup bought it.

I remember those fried McDonalds Apple turnover pies when they came in a paper sleeve. The orange drink was mixed in a giant fishbowl globe and many McD's were still open walk up counters.

Yes I am that old. Amerca was good.

Sorry, the pic is from Yelp. And I prefer a French manicure. One time my gf had a haupia pie and had some of the filling on her lips and I was laughing. She didn't understand why. lol

Great story! How is the Guava fare in the Islands, Bryan?

I've made my own Guava pastries here at home before because sadly, they aren't readily available elsewhere.

Way to pay it forward Bryan, Shaun is well deserving.

Love the story Shaun, brings back great memories.

The first McD's opened in my town in the mid 70's, you would have thought it was the opening of a gourmet restaurant with lines out the door for weeks on end. Prior to that the closest McD's was about forty-five minutes away, so it was a very special treat to have McD's, usually for back-to-school clothes shopping or Christmas shopping.

After the McD's opened in my town it became the place to go to in the winter after a few hours of sledding, Fries, apple pie and hot chocolate. In high school we all met up after football and basketball games for fries and apple pie before heading to wherever the party was that night, it was our version of Arnold's Diner.

That is cool. Just the sort of "feel good" that is needed every now and then.

Thanks!

Guavas grow fine here. I have a tree at the house in town that I don't even water, but still gives fruits. I don't eat or drink too much guava stuff these days. What I did like was guava jelly/peanut butter sandwiches. Oh yeah, eating/drinking too much guava will plug you up!

The first McD's opened a few miles from my house back in 1968. In the early 70s, mom would go and pick up Sunday breakfast. All I remember is it came in a thick paper kind of box with pockets inside to hold condiments.

The cookies are great BTW, thanks again Bryan. I'm going to try one of the pies in the air fryer tonight.

Shaun,
What is the process called when you restore parts to have that golden color plating ?
What color is that? It's not gold, right?

Air fryer not such a great idea. Glad I only used one. Must be deep fried.

Sugar, yellow zinc or yellow cadmium.

Baz - my wife makes awesome guava pastries, secret is in the guava jam/preserves used. We tried maybe 10 brands/variations until we found the one that works, and now at least our local Publix carries it .

I'll check the pantry tonight and if we have the stuff in the house I'll send a pic via PM, otherwise I'll have to hunt it down online etc.

I worked in a Popeyes Fried Chicken in Potomac Mills Mall in Woodbridge, VA in 1986. We had apple pies that were deep friend and were just like the McD's pies. We'd then coat them in cinnamon and sugar (not sure if McDs did that or not. They were very tasty, and highly likely to remove skin from your mouth from the lava hot filling.

We also had a guy whose only job was making biscuits. All of the biscuits were essentially from scratch and always awesome. We'd occasionally steal a raw biscuit, separate it into several smaller bits of dough, and then deep fry them and coat in cinnamon and sugar. Freakin spectacular!

The Italina version of that deep fried pizza dough is called a Zeppoli usually sprinkled with powdered sugar. One restaurant around here pours Nutella over top.

+1

I have received a couple of care packages from Bryan. One for Christmas Exchange and then one surprise coffee extravaganza.
