grinder flap disk threaded vs flat

The local hardware store had 2 different types of dewalt flap discs. One had a heavier center that was threaded, and the other had a lighter center that was not threaded. Both look like they would work. It looks like the one would require the removal of the inner flange nut, but use the lock nut (of course). The other disc would use both nuts.

Can you use either or is the one with the heavy center designed for very specific angle grinders?

Steve, I use the one like the DeWalt. No thread. With the angle you use them on the angle grinder's flange etc don't hit the work surface.

I think the ones I get are 125x2mm and work very well.

The only difference is how they attach to the tool. Mine takes the second one that is held on with flange nut that is supposed to be tightened with a spanner tool.

I shouldn't say "only". I think the one with the thread on interface costs more too.

The other side of the one that is threaded looks like the one that isn't threaded. I think it would require the jam nut in addition to the threading on the disc itself. The price difference was 20¢. It seems like they should both be able to be used on the same grinder, just one without the inner nut/flange and the other with both nuts/flanges.

Nope, doesn't need the nut. I put a wire wheel "disk" on my angle grinder with the thread. It goes on a certain number of twists then stops. And I gave it a light tighten with a wrench. You probably don't even need the wrench as the rotation tightens it.

When I bought my Makita (several years ago) it came with the spanner collar and the reg nut to fit both of those types. I would guess they all do the same.

I forget how many are in the pack, 12 or 15, but I order them on Amazon or go to HF. They are the type that uses the flat nut in a spanner to tighten. I run the nut down and then use the rotation of the pad to tighten it by hand.

Thanks folks. I bought one of each when I bought the grinder yesterday. I used the one that's threaded to sharpen the mower blades today (holy moly, that beats the hell out of using a file!)
