what is missing is the outer hinge faring. probably damaged in some way. the faring is removed and the aircraft can be dispatched without it. it has restrictions and time limits but basically it can fly that way so the fairing can be more "conviently" repaired.

Yup, sometimes called the flap canoe. It’s there to reduce drag and doesn’t have any functional purpose.

I fly a lot. More than a handful of times the apu has been broken and unable to start the plane on its own. Only a few times have the pilots announced the jump start at the terminal. Within the last month, I had pilots refuse a plane in Chicago (after we boarded) and this crj that i was swapped for a different plane after the departure time was hit.

As for the first flight above, the pilots were standoffish when i told them they lost a canoe. “What really?!”, then a “we know”… I’ve also overheard them rant about passengers that are entitled, so i guess everyone gets the squeeze with a 9-5.

Saw an episode of Air Disasters that covered a couple instances of the 737 losing motors like that. It had to do with the method of motor removal for service that Boeing did not call for. To remove a motor correctly they had to remove the mount to the wing and was very extensive. Instead, mechanics found a way to remove the motor while leaving the mount in place. Removing it did not do the damage but lifting the motor back into place stressed mounts as they were banged around to get seated weakening them.

Love that show.
