Porsche Boxster/Cayman are ending production

The end of the ICE Boxster and Cayman production is later this year . I personally think this is a mistake . I guess it's progress ? I love the 6 cylinder wail of my Boxster S, it never gets old .

I now understand of what you speak. The singing of the six is intoxicating. I am so thankful to get the Cayman while the market was not too obscene.

It will be interesting to see how sales go.

Porsche ending production of their finest products. I think this is one of dumbest business decisions in history, ever, period. They will regret it

Makes sense. Their bread and butter are Cayenne and Macan

Roman Circus..... Give the people bread and circuses!!!

It's Porsche adapting to their factual buying customers

We see the same Bravo Sriracha with dodge and the discontinuation of the Challenger/Charger….

Regulators must be ecstatic to take down such a diverse market.

The German and European laws on pollution are getting crazy. I had heard, Porsche will fight as long as possible to keep the 911 a ICE vehicle. They now have a sorta hybrid, 911 that uses an electric motor to spin up the turbocharger, much like F1 engines. No turbo lag at all with that system. No electric propulsion to the wheels, just the turbo.

I have said it before, if I commuted every day for 100 miles, an electric vehicle makes sense. With no commute at all, I will stick to my long paid for antique cars as long as gas is available. I suspect that will be longer than I will be alive.

I agree. I thought they were pulling back from the EV push due to lack of demand….I haven’t followed too closely, but I thought Taycan sales were nowhere near expectations, and resale values are horrible. I just think it’s not what the public wants. A few months ago I was talking with someone from Rolls Royce about the Spectre (great looking car IMO) and he said they aren’t selling well at all. Told me if that car had a V12 under the hood they wouldn’t be able to keep them on the lot.

It's all about profit.
It probably doesn't cost a large amount more of money to produce a 911 GT car than a Boxster/Caymen and they sell for a ton more coin.
I think.

An electric Boxster/Cayman is just sadly wrong.

One day Porsche will realize this was their downfall…

I think.
But why eliminate the customer base that wants the Porsche ICE experience but can't or won't afford the 911, especially if sunk costs are already in place for the less expensive car? A sale is a sale.

I'll never understand big business. (obviously, ha ha!)

Yup. I have been waiting, planning and saving to buy a new Cayman in a few years (dont want any more used vehicles as I get old). I really wanted a brand new one that would be my last sportscar before I kick it. I am not ready yet so they lost me as a customer.

I'd like to see into the future. Ten years from now the 987s and 981s may bring big $$$$$.

Porsche made this same move with the Macan and has now been forced to backtrack and sell the previous gen ICE Macan next to the EV only new model due to slow sales. It will be interesting to see if they end up in the same boat with their sports cars. The new C63 AMG has been a flop due to the 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain. New Challenger EV sales are horrific and Dodge is scrambling to restart Hemi production. The track record isn’t great here, historically giving the customer what they don’t want has not been a good strategy.

Product planning cycle for cars is measured in decades, and EV sentiments and regulatory boundary conditions time cycles are in years.

I think move to EV 718 probably made sense when they headed down that road. 718 is there worst selling car, I think they are more risk adverse with 911 series. I love my 718 and have no interest in an electric version, I am curious and optimistic porsche could do a good job on the first commercially viable at scale sports car.

Making the 911 GTS a hybrid was a pretty bold move. Honestly I think making the 911 turbo an EV fits the cars character. 911 turbo has always been unbelievably fast and accessible speed, I could see a 2000 hp ev 911 turbo.

jacking up the price of the base 911 and ruining the 5 gauge cluster by turning it into what it is now was also a bold move that ensured I wont ever buy one.

Making the dash of the 911 look like their SUV models also ensured I would never buy one

When they designed it so it is impossible to open your engine lid and look at the engine you just spent all that money on, they ensured I would never buy one

With the boxer/cayman, I could justify it (not seeing the engine) in order to have the extra storage space behind the seats

The boxer/cayman interior was to my eye, the finest looking dash and gauge cluster out there

I suspect that with the move to EV, that too will be gone

I also do not like the direction Porsche chose since... more or less covid. They used to be "great sports cars" for "the rest of us". Track on sunday, drive to work on monday, robust, well made. Not the Ferrari crowd $$ and purchasing model. Anyone could aspire to a used one, or one day a new one...
Since then,
- even the base 911 models have gone up 30-40K (maybe less in inflation corrected money but still) and they are full of screens and doodads.
- 718s were saddled with this 4 cylinder nobody wanted (could be a decent engine but read the crowd)
- Manual transmission is reserved for special T model or GT models which are loaded with $$ options, and in the case of the T it's that "Mecosa" PDK derived box nobody loves, the real "normal" 6 is for special models only
- GT models went up almost 50% when Porsche realized they instead of the dealer could charge more, killing the dream for regular folks.
- they seemingly release nothing but special $$ parts bin models lately, for which you need to be a "friend of the brand", an influencer, or buy all the macans and taycans prior, like Ferrari does
- They are all over social media with %$%$# influencer crap trying to look cool, you cannot buy cool, make cars people want and can afford
- Digital dash, screens, millions of COVs in the engine, they forgot to be the reliable long lasting brand they once were.

That EV move is not entirely their fault, governments dropped that silliness on them and killed the European car industry in favor of China... Still they shoulda have seen the backlash coming and in true porsche fashion could have maintained their gas car longer with minimal redesigns, I am surprised in the current "Hmm,maybe we effed up with that EV mandate" climate, they would be stopping production of those ICE cars... I thought the macan was continuing because they aren't selling the EV ones.. I live in Porsche county, never seen ONE. .. I'll be looking for a used 981 or 718 4.0 down the road if the prices do not double.. No digital dash PDK for me.

its how cars go unfortunately. Us old folks and enthusiasts have always yearned for old tech and simple cars, yet they always move towards the opposite.

718 was basically 12-15 year old tech which is why alot of us were drawn to it.

The trend towards more complicated, heavier, computer laden cars will continue for all marks. Possible exception: MIata

I am not so much against tech.

If executed correctly, it can be great...and look good too

However, I draw the line at removing the real engine and replacing it with a basically a large R/C car motor
