Points well taken. I wasn't aware of a missing crucial piece of rubber. I assume it fills the gap pictured behind the latch catch? I certainly don't like the idea of sucking hot air in |
Yup, that's the gap that needs filling.

The old Porsche market is strange at the moment, it definitely calmed down but, as ever, not enough on the stuff I really want a crack at (like another 356). I see 912s selling for long hood 911 prices now, which is both cool as I love swb 912s but a little odd vs the "legend" 911. Looks like 100% original and 100% $modified$ cars still do well (think RSR clones, even SC based). Seems like cars with small mods like wrong engine puts other cars in a middling category at the moment... In the case of an S, considering all 911s of a similar year have the same body/engine case and the only difference are some suspension/trim (all easily optioned or retrofittable) AND the S engine cams/tuning specificities, the value of an S is definitely in its matching number S engine IMO... if it were a T I think that engine/fuel injection would have mattered a lot less and that bid was T money... I am still seeing stock long hood S sell in the 150-200 bracket.. Is it worth looking for a correct engine ? dunno, maybe... |
On returning it to stock form, I was referring to raising the car back up and putting high profile tires back on. I love the way it looks and handles now.
The guy who built the engine told me he might be able to find the original engine. I never pursued it because there's no way it would go back in a long as I own the car. |
Don't feel sorry for me about the no sale. It's probably a blessing in disguise. I rarely have sellers remorse about selling cars but this one? More than likely
|
I think there is probably upside $ in locating/rebuilding the original engine, but it's a considerable investment in time and money and still a gamble that the market is gonna stay good while all that happens. Another consideration may be acquiring the original case and selling with the car and let someone else deal with it... I would not bother for a T or E but for an S it'll always be worthwhile eventually. Anyway sorry it did not go the way you wanted but I'm secretely happy for you, as I said I wish I'd failed to sell my 356s...
|
I'd raise the car to 'euro height' and put 65 series tires on it. Ideally on 5.5" rims as that will give it a great feel to the steering.
Having had the chance to sample a stock 912 with 4.5" wheels and skinny tires it was eye opening how hard the 6" wheels and 60 series tires made my steering feel. |

It really has nothing to do with the engine weight in the rear as much as it does with the contact patch of the tires. If you ever get a chance to try driving a 912 or even a 911 with skinny tires/wheels, do it. It'll open your eyes as to how these cars really were meant to be enjoyed. Has your car been corner balanced? |
I don't doubt you Scott. But I set up the suspension for what I like and it steers well for the set up which is more suited for the track than street (it will never see the track). Set up: lowered one click, Tarrett adjustable 25mm anti sway, turbo tie rod kit, Bilstein HD, max camber, caster, corner balanced, Yokohama Nueva ADO8R, sport seats.
Not a car you'd take across the country but really fun in the twisties. In other words, it's a toy and not a daily driver |

Wasn't trying to guilt you into anything, Greg.
Just making some observations on things that might have not sat well with the bidders. The gap at the license plate panel is critical to your engine running cool. I'd check for gaps around the flat tin to make sure it's sealed off too. Knowing the dynamics of how the cooling system is supposed to work helped me get my car running right. Now, about those front trunk bump stops in the corners of the hood... =;>{) |
Oh, and as to ride height etc., I was always obliged to have mine set up for freeway use since it was always at least a one hour freeway drive to get anywhere that I wanted to use my cars for fun.
|
Your points are well taken and thanks for pointing these out. I'm embarrassed to say after everything I've done to this car I neglected these details. The car will be completed one of these days. I've only owned it for 10 years, you don't rush into these things!
|
$70k was very strong money for that car. What do you imagine that it's worth?
|
Apparently 70k. The car's worth more than that to me though so the point is moot
