Any dermatology pros out there?
I have an 11 y.o. Granddaughter who loves the water. She also lives in Arizona so a jump in the pool is always a quick way to cool off.
Unfortunately we have noticed after about 5-10 minutes after swimming in the ocean or a pool she develops almost hive like welts on her legs and body that she also says are "itchy". We first thought maybe contact dermatitis from chlorine but it also occurs in saltwater. The one thing that stands out is it occurs more quickly and often if it's cold water. Doesn't happen when she showers or bathes. Any idea what the root or trigger of the condition could be? I have my Wife getting some Caladryl Clear (benadryl) for relief which is topical. Would oral benadryl be more efficient? TIA

Take photos when it happens and take her to a dermatologist. This not the place to find answers.

Well, you learn something new every day you attend "Google University".
Looks like maybe it's "Cold Urticaria". Never even heard of it! https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/cold-urticaria/symptoms-causes/syc-20371046

Try oral diphenhydramine prior to going in the water

And what's interesting to me is that tarantulas and some caterpillars have "urticating" hairs that cause irritation.

My sister is a dermatology pathologist, or at least she was until she quit her medical practice a few years ago. If you posted a picture of the rash, she might be able to give a free opinion. ![]()
