Any dermatology pros out there?

I have an 11 y.o. Granddaughter who loves the water. She also lives in Arizona so a jump in the pool is always a quick way to cool off.

Unfortunately we have noticed after about 5-10 minutes after swimming in the ocean or a pool she develops almost hive like welts on her legs and body that she also says are "itchy".

We first thought maybe contact dermatitis from chlorine but it also occurs in saltwater. The one thing that stands out is it occurs more quickly and often if it's cold water. Doesn't happen when she showers or bathes.

Any idea what the root or trigger of the condition could be? I have my Wife getting some Caladryl Clear (benadryl) for relief which is topical. Would oral benadryl be more efficient? TIA

Take photos when it happens and take her to a dermatologist. This not the place to find answers.

Yeah Wife is making an appointment. Not looking for diagnosis, just seeing if any Pelicans have experienced this before.

How you been, life good?

Well, you learn something new every day you attend "Google University".

Looks like maybe it's "Cold Urticaria". Never even heard of it!

Try oral diphenhydramine prior to going in the water

Wow, interesting! Who knew?!?

And what's interesting to me is that tarantulas and some caterpillars have "urticating" hairs that cause irritation.

She's still going to go to her regular doc and get checked.

BTW, got that package sent of finally. Man, you never realize how much crap you have until you pack up to move!

I'm good, buddy! Hope you are too. I passed through Ventura Co. on my MC a week ago on the 101 and thought of you. I have had a rash after the first good sunburn of the year and always just called it a sun allergy, it goes away and I never gave it much thought. Not sure if that is relevant here.

My sister is a dermatology pathologist, or at least she was until she quit her medical practice a few years ago. If you posted a picture of the rash, she might be able to give a free opinion.
