Apes throwing feces...

Can we have an intelligent conversation about this?

It's just a total conundrum that defies my feeble brain power to understand.

Don't piss them off at the zoo! Or are you talking about the more evolved ones?

Those who study primate behavior will tell you the throwing of feces is an expression of frustration and aggression. In species with more sophisticated means of communication the behaviors are usually discarded.
There are of course, exceptions.

They have signs up at the San Diego zoo warning of this behavior at the gorilla exhibit.

Many years ago at the San Diego zoo, my attention was drawn to a crowd of people in front of a cage with a young gorilla in it. The people would walk close to the cage area, scream, and retreat in mass. When I got closer, I saw the gorilla was throwing poop at the crowd and being entertained that they would all scream and run back. I'm sure that reinforced its tendency to throw poop.

Gorillas throw it. My dumbass basset hound eats it.

Hounds have the most sensitive noses on the planet...yet a steaming pile fresh from the south end of our northbound St. Bernard seems a delicacy not to be passed up.

Some things we're not meant to understand.

Back in the early 70s I was working as a news photographer. Time magazine had me go for a visit to the Alabama state prison, that had just been taken over by the feds over the horrid conditions there.

It was a spooky sound of hearing those large front gates slamming shut behind us. We had about a dozen reporters and photographers, and as many state troopers and prison guards surrounding us.

The stench was overwhelming, and one of the guards said prisoners on either side of the aisle would throw feces at each other. They had 8 prisoners in cells designed for two. Stopped up toilets, and they often just urinated in the walkway to see how far they could get the stream.

It was a horrid place. I never wanted to be a criminal before, but I knew for 100% certaity I never ever wanted to go to prison, or jail. It was sure nice to see the big doors open back up and get back to the fresh air.

My photos were published in Time magazine.

My Lab would eat her own poop... I never asked her about it because I didn't realize she was anthropomorphic at the time

My dog is convinced kitty poops are Payday candy bars. Crunchy bits covering a soft chewy inside.

My Lab used to love "cat crunchies". You could smell it on her breath.

Remember the 5 D's of dodgeball: Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge. If you can dodge ape poop, you can dodge a ball.

Our Yorkie was doing this as well and would even try to eat his own poop. He's on a probiotic now and that behavior has stopped.
