I tried to quit sugar completely so many times, I do a bang up job for a week or so on willpower, and at one point it's like I have a second brain taking over and erasing the motivation code and rebooting me, and boom, I pounce on sweet stuff again and even "forget" I was trying to cut it out... Very related to stress also (super stressful job) and sometimes it feels uncontrollable in tense moments. Gotta try to go less "cold turkey" and instead reduce intake here and there a little at a time. Thankfully I do not drink much or I'd have liver disease already. Way too fatty as is... I think my #1 weakness is juices, I drink my sugar...

I did it by (accidentally) finding a substitute. In my case, I used to 'stress snack' after dinner. chocolate, cookies, anything I could find. I started eating a pickle at night. Really can't eat more than one, it broke the habit, and after a month pickles went back to being an occasional condiment.

Doc Lustig is full of good info. I've watched all of his podcasts and have followed his advice for years now. Once my sugar came down to a sane level I eased up a bit on carbs. I'll eat a little bread or pasta now and then. Whole fruit but no juice. A glass of fruit juice is the same as drinking a soda. He's big on gut health like the other smart docs who I pay attention to. We have 40 trillion critical critters living in our bodies, good guys and some bad guys. A constant war within. The bad guys (cancer cells, etc) feed on sugar only and the good guys feed solely on fiber. Cut the food supply off to the enemy and you win the war. These docs say if you cut concentrated sugar from your diet you drastically reduce the possibility of Cancer, Diabetes, heart disease, Parkinsons among many other diseases, even dementia. Dr. Sten Eckberg is another in the know doc with lots of you tube vids. He gets a little too technical for me sometimes but a brilliant guy. Dr. Steven Gundry is another gut guy, he got me hooked on goat cheese. He's a bit of a capitalist though, making big bucks off his olive oil and supplements. Worth a listen to though.

My wife can take one nibble of a cookie and walk away, I wont quit until the package is done and I have snorted the crumbs. I mostly cope by not keeping sugary snacks around.

Its hard with 3 young children though. I hate how much sugar is in the stuff they eat particularly away from the house. However I dont want to be one of those super strict parents and screw up the kids relationship with healthy eating.

Here in NZ we have a product called Maltexo. It's barley malt syrup. You guys have something much the same - picture below.

So if you are craving some sugar, have a teaspoon or two of this stuff instead. Sure it is a carb, but not quite as evil as can sugar.

And like Greg said, feed the good guys. Real yogurt is good, not that flavoured sugary dairy desert they like to call yogurt.

The problem here in America is the food companies add sugar to everything, whether they need to or not.

I am diabetic, fairly well controlled and use a CGM. Sugar isn't horrible for spiking my glucose like HFCS is. When I do drink a soda pop it is usually Sprechers which uses honey and that spikes my glucose even less. I refuse to eat or drink anything with artificial sweeteners. They mess with your gut biome and give me a splitting headache.

Mostly I drink black coffee, water or iced tea. Try to avoid heavily processed foods. My weakness is butter. I butter toast before adding peanut butter and/or jam. If I eat a toaster pastry, I butter it. I have weaned myself from buttered popcorn everynight. Just salt now.

What's the problem with butter? Surely, that doesn't have added sugar.

No, but it has one of the highest calorie per gram ratios on the planet.

Specifically, 2 tbls has more calories than a can of Mountain Dew. 208 vs 170/180 depending on sweetener.

Ah, gotcha. I had no idea that it was that high in calorie!

The right fat is good and I eat as much as I can. Butter, nuts, avocado, cheese, etc. Your body only burns 2 sources of food to make energy, sugar or fat. I'm very active physically and need fuel but sugar is no Bueno so i don't partake in any form but whole fruit. My weight stays at high school level because I burn the fat instead of store it.

I was too. I am no longer. running, eating right. even my doc said it was prob hereditary, but I wanted a moment to take a swing at it my way.

you should ask about a class to take. usually free. and I learned stuff. a lot I had in my mind was wrong.

I ran for a few years but stopped last year. I walk/bike now and do weights 3 times a week.
My doctor sent me to a nutritionist a couple of years ago. It helped. I try eating right but I love Ruffles and Jeni’s Ice Cream.

Monounsaturated fats are good. Butter is a fat that is OK, but not as good as nuts, avacado, olive oil...
