Being a good neighbor?

How would y'all handle this?

Here's the quandary. It's the rainy season, and my new neighbors behind me are trying to eliminate the giant puddle that forms in front of their house whenever it rains.

Yesterday the husband installed guttering to solve the issue. Incidentally its a horrific looking job where the gutters obviously slope away from the down spouts, but that's moot. The real issue is gutters aren't going to work because rain falls everywhere, not just his roof.

I think he almost realized the flaw in his thinking after the puddle reappeared with last night's rain. See, he's out there this morning working on a new solution. He's building a little cinder block damn to keep the water from flowing down the side of his house...

I'd like to tell him that unless he can get the city to regrade and repave the street in front of his house, his only remedy is to wait a couple of hour for the puddle to disappear. I just don't think he wants to hear that.

Some people learn better not by instruction but by letting reality reveal itself through their own problem solving. Figuring out that rain falls on adjacent spaces, and not just on the roof, may be one of those things.

(However, there are those that don't manage that either, so one may have to keep an eye on whatever solution is devised to make sure no harm comes of it.)

The real solution is a French drain to the street.

I want to throat punch my neighbor everytime he comes over and questions why I am doing it this way, or that way , or whatever . He made a big fuss about how I was tinting windows a few weeks back, then a day later, he is telling me how to operate my backhoe, when I was digging out a stump .
If I am in a good mood, I tolerate it, but if Im tired and just trying to get something, done, I find it beyond annoying , and always try to find a snarky reply This guy could not pack my lunch for most projects, yet he always attempts to micromanage whatever I am up to
Does he think he is smarter than I ? Ive lived next door to the guy for 25 years, he has watched me build hundreds of vehicles , trucks, buildings, , concrete work, excavation , construction , tractor maintenance, etc.. you name it . Ive only seen him build a garden, and maybe plant a tree here and there .
I called him captian obvious a few weeks back and he just started talking to me again.
Id just keep my comments to my self .

Dixie eventually the neighbor will realize pushing a boulder uphill is futile . Just go about your business , nothing to see here .

I would go take a bike ride on the beach, do some gardening, or work on my motorcycles.

Seems to always be a winning solution for me in situations like this.

A quote seems appropriate about now. "Stupid is as stupid does."

Can't fix stupid. Sorry.

Thanks y'all. I know I shouldn't say anything, and with y'all's reminders, I won't.

I used to tend bar. There was a regular customer that I really didn't like. I was happy to get him a drink, but I didn't want to chat (he always did). In an effort to cause him to leave me alone or go sit at a table and use a waitress, I was a dick to him. I'd get him drinks, but wasn't nice, was snarky, etc.... He seemed to love it and the worse I was the more attached to me he seemed to be. He did mellow, so I guess it sort of worked, he didn't leave me alone, but did get more tolerable.

Your guy probably tells his wife that he's going to chat with his buddy when he comes to talk to you.

One thing I have observed in my life on this big blue spinning ball, is that people who are often are not " doers " seem to be very critical of the actual people doing the doing . They will pick apart the handy work of someone who attempts to do something on their own, but they themselves would never dream of an attempt at the task at hand .
Every time my neighbor makes a comment about how he would do it , Im just dying inside, to hand the job off to him, and watch him struggle . " Sure Paul, show me, here ya go !" get er done !!!
I mean, this is the guy who comes over for help changing a lawn tractor belt, then critiqued my work, when I was installing a diesel engine in my tow truck last summer .
He made the" psst" sound of disapproval when I was pulling it out ,without removing the entire front clip . So, then , instead of working on my project , and getting things done, I end up arguing, or explaining myself with someone who could not pull this work off in his wildest dreams .
I was actually going to post about this a few weeks ago, when I called him " Mr Obvious " .
I was in go mode, and he kept nagging at me, and getting me off the machine to tell me how to do it a different way .
My old landlord had a saying for this, that I always thought was funny .
When someone would start bugging him while he was working on something, he would say
"Im f^%$king this horse, you just stand there, and look out for the farmer "
I have no idea if he made that up , or if its an old farmer saying, but we all peed ourselves laughing when he used it on an annoying client .
Carry on .
