The replacement 17mm sockets arrived today. Shipped UPS 2nd day air. Gotta love the packing. I guess I'll work on my rusty and smelly screwdrivers.

How about something made specifically for the job. I have something very similar, I’m not endorsing these, and they both allow me to impact the wheel nuts off, but also protect the wheel finish if you get careless with a wobble.

I did my first batch of 10 screwdrivers with no problem. However, Infound some more in my drawer at the other house and tried to get them warranteed. The CSA told me that rust and smelly/moldy handles are not covered under warranty. We went back and forth for 30 minutes. She said she had no supervisor that I could speak to. She finally caved and said I can send the screwdrivers in to quality assurance. I asked for a shipping slip. She emailed it to me, and I packed the box and shipped it out yesterday.
Perhaps she was a little suspicious because I'm doing all these warranty claims so she denied the claim. However, her shipping slip was with UPS 2nd Day. That must cost more than the 6 screwdrivers! I had a couple with 12" shafts, so the box was quite large. lol That said, a couple days prior to speaking to her, I spoke with another gentleman and it was no problem with the warranty. Those 10 screwdrivers arrived yesterday. I'm not so sure on the quality of the new stuff made in Taiwan. They look a little flimsy and fragile. ![]() ![]()

I broke a 13mm, 6pt, ⅜" drive, deep well socket the other day. My first thought was "buy an old Craftsman off of eBay". And there are a bunch. It would likely end up costing me $10 with shipping. I could call the number and request a new one, or I could pay $5 for a Tekton with free shipping from the big-A, so that's what I'm going to do. I keep hearing about the Tekton being good stuff. I guess I'll see.

Today I received the original lost shipment . It was a sealed shipping bag with no holes or tears in it . The only thing inside the bag was the plastic header card for the ratchet . No tools were in the bag . An obvious error at the shipper .

I vibrated the pin out of my 20" Craftsman 1/2" breaker bars last week with the air impact and put it back together without the ball bearing that keeps the head in place. I went to use it today and it was floppy all over and there was no way I was going to find the ball bearing on the ground outside, so I grabbed a ball bearing out of a box that was about 3/16" in dia. and put it back together again. 45 years old and it is as good as new.

I just broke my 1/2" Craftsman breaker bar on a 911 rear axle nut and was able to exchange it for a new one at my local Ace Hardware store which is a Craftsman dealer... was surprisingly easy : ) : )

Years ago the last of the sears stores around here wouldn't honor warranty on some cracked sockets.

They didn't ask for a receipt or proof of purchase? That's what Ace and Lowes do to me.

I replaced my old beat set of craftsman screwdrivers like the ones you have, with a new set, but now I wish I had gotten a set that has the bigger handles, like the ones marked with a red arrow.

Doesn’t a tool stamped Craftsman, Ace, or Kobalt, offer enough proof? Just another way to weasel out of the lifetime warranty. |

I called the 800# about a year ago on a screwdriver I broke the tip on. Asked me to send photo and I had replacement in about a week. Effortless, but the 40 year old tools are better than what they sell / replace with today.

Yup. The new screwdriver handles are so skinny, they just don't feel right.

I have always thought that Craftsman screwdrivers, even the older ones were pretty poor. They work fine on the little around the house projects, but seem to strip out easily on tough fasteners, especially Phillips.
I don’t think I would bother with the warranty on their screwdrivers. It seems to me that when Sears first sold the line, the new owners decided to ditch the warranty, but I think they quickly discovered that the bad will was costing them more sales than just replacing broken tools that probably cost them pennies to make.

Over the years I’ve bought used Snap-On tools, especially during the financial housing bust, (Sad but people needed money). Many of my Craftsman screwdrivers are prying tools for paint cans and such.
