I bought a Grand National

I wanted a non GN 87 Regal Turbo, but this one came of geographically within reach. It's an 87 with a spun rod bearing, a little bit of rust but overall not too bad. The interior is in decent condition. The frame still has a lot of black paint on it. Many of these out there are much worse, that is if you're a bottom feeder looking for a cheap one.

As a project, it's going to be many many small jobs. At this point it seems overwhelming. I'm attacking the engine and appearance at the same time. The engine will be rebuilt with a new crank and some mild performance mods. 450-500 hp is fairly easy with these cars. I also have a very well built transmission from Richard Clark's shop in North Carolina.

As for the body, everything that can be unbolted and is currently in good condition is going to be redone with Eastwood rattle can OEM matching black. That's right, rattle can. The trunk, bumpers, hood, header panel and right fender for now are going to get done that way, they're all in pretty good shape.

In addition the that the brake and fuel systems need to be gone through completely.

I'll post pics, but it seems my phone just takes them too big.

It looks like the one Derek from VGG rescued. Good luck with the project! Good luck with the motivation, too!!

I believe his GN is worse. I love his videos though. I wish I was as relaxed as he is. He has a burgundy 87 Turbo also.

I think in a few years this car will ultimately replace my 911.

I know that those were the stock wheels, and they look good on this car, but I feel like some black BBS mesh style wheels would be awesome!

As far as wheels go, I never really did like the stock GN wheels. I plan on de-badging the car and putting Turbo T wheels on it. Like this:

Hell yeah, those are sweet!

They are even better than the BBS mesh style which are a little dated.

Post updates and enjoy the build the journey begins.
Will it be 100% stock restoration?
You could unlock a little more HP.

It will be modified. Nothing crazy though. I want the rest of the drivetrain to be able to handle it.

These are mid to low 12 second 1/4 mile cars with very little effort. Something along those lines is the goal and it's gonna get driven regularly.

You are aware they sell base coat clear coat systems at paint jobbers and it would probably be far less expensive than Eastwood rattle can paint?

I like the Turbo T wheels lots!

One of my best friends had a silver 85-87 T-Type Regal in high school. It was immaculate. I loved that car and drove it a few times.

Nice project.
Did the mouldings between the bumpers and car body disintegrate?
