Does house paint cost less in other states?
Exterior trim from SW is $90 + 10.25% tax per gallon. I'm not sure you get a full gallon either. Other better to best brands are all up there. Years ago when CA first started with regs I saw some people shipping paint in from other states, not for cost, to get good paint, Now the paints are all pretty good here unless you pay <$40 where you get what you pay for, chalk.
But 90 bucks is pretty high don't you think? Or does yours cost the same? |

CA - you are hard pressed to find a name brand paint for 90-100 per gallon. I think I paid 130 for gallon of SW top of the line paint last year.
I think HD is around 60-70 per gallon |

SW and others seem to have a huge spread in prices from the lowest to highest in their paint ranges. I'd guess it is marketing more than anything but I'm no paint industry insider.
I've paid in that neighborhood for modified alkyd paint for cabinets. I recently discovered that I can no longer get oil based trim paint. Not happy about that...

I mostly consult Consumer Reports when buying paints. I just looked at their ratings, and three of the top four paints were Behr at H. D. They ranged from around $43 to $63 per gallon. For all my exterior stains and paints for wood, I go with Total Wood Perservative, which is running around $55/gal. now. In the ratings, I see Valspar and S.W. rated fairly high bu8t generally lower than most Behr paints. Since I'm no expert and don't have a testing lab, I can only go with what the C.R. ratings tell me.

It's half that here in Ohio. I painted my trailer with exterior latex from SW, a gallon of primer and a gallon of top coat. They were $45 each. This was their mid-grade. They have a higher quality exterior latex and I think it was $50 or $55 a gallon.

Locally we have Dunn Edwards which is available in some of the South West. Very good paint but very expensive unless you have an account and are buying enough. They hate one gallon walk-ins wanting a custom color and penalize them fiercely. And it works because DIY'ers stay away. |

Hmmm. Here's the Behr prices from the Albany, Oregon Home depot...if a project was big enough, maybe worth a drive up I-5? Oh, remember..no sales tax in Oregon.

(Leastwise it did. After a lifetime under the same ownership, I understand that the brand has been sold. So, who knows what the future is like for MP).

I looked today. A gallon of SW satin or gloss enamel (I presume that's what you mean by trim) is $85 to $95 at Lowe's. That's including the 7% sales tax.

I don’t know if S-W stores are priced differently than Lowe’s, but Lowe’s has a gallon of exterior satin paint for $67-82 per gallon. Lowest grade to highest grade.

I have a SW pro account. The regular consumer price for Emerald ( top of the line..) here is currently $96. As a contractor, I pay roughly mid 60s ( my discount varies on my account usage.
I can tell you the Lowe's/SW is nowhere near the quality of the regular SW. Not saying it's bad paint, but it's a step or two below. .

When I buy SW Paint, I use my painters account and use my CC to pay for it. I have to see how much it is next time.

That's what we pay for good paint around here.

I can go SW. Vinny, the prices told to me by a contractor 3 days ago match what you say to the dollar. so 60 bucks if I can buy under an account. My accounts dried up many years ago. Funny, one major SoCal lumber yard chain gives discounts to only those that hold an account. I could show a GC license and want to pay at the counter and no discount. That's dumb. So I don't go there even if they have the best lumber and plenty of it. It's only 10% which pays the tax. 1/3rd off at level one discount at SW is much better. |

You can pay cash at SW and still get them to set up contractor pricing for you. The discount you get is based on how much you buy but it's better than nothing. You're probably like me, I don't do much anymore and I no longer maintain most of my accounts. Don't really need them.

Most things cost less in other states. But our state is trying its best to catch up.

The stuff I bought for my patio roof beams was in that $90/gallon range.
Man am I glad you wrote that. I bought 5 gallons at Lowes for my son's house last year. I thought the paint was pure garbage.
