Reminds me of an old joke...a woman goes into a hardware store and tells them that she needs a small piece of rope. The guy asks her, "how small?"

I'd say the best thing is to just unravel the thing. Probably would be done with it if you had unless you're just playing with a thought experiment.

I don't know about where you live but around here "How long is a piece of string." is an annoying saying.
