I suspect that's not the case at someplace like haulover inlet at the right/wrong time of the day. As I understand it, a couple of times of day, the inlet gets crazy because of the tide. I suspect it's treacherous then. Hell, it doesn't look safe if you're in a boat. I assume it would be similar to a rip tide (which I've never experienced, but seems pretty dangerous).

I don't know about the Haulover, only seen the vids, but riptides are just plain scary as shibe as you call it. Anything invisible is scary enough. The closest I've ever been was surfing in my younger days and going out at one point and coming in a quarter mile away. I did way more body surfing than board and I always listened to the lifeguards. If they didn't like it I didn't go out. I never saw an outright ban. There are always those that are foolish. I never once went to the famous Wedge. Why with the rep for so many grave injuries.

There are some epic rides shown but those were the exception AFAIC. The water at the base of the wave can be as little as 3 feet under certain conditions.

If this needs to stay on topic, yes, you get launched.

This happens at least 2x a month and sometimes just days apart. State Hwy 49 in Tuolumne County.

Known obstacles.
Garmin. Smartphone map routing. Company GPS.
A freakin cornucopia of warning "DANGER AHEAD" data available.

And yet cargo ships and trains still collide on this earth....

State roads.
State licensees required to travel such roads.
Route mapped. Hours limited.
I had a friend who moved mobile homes and went half-crazy with submitting regulations to even pull on federal highways across state lines. Had to jog to keep up with the old man. Guy was primed for anything 24/7 and yet it sucked the spirit out of all his profit. He was an earner.
