planning a stomach bug tomorrow. FISHING!!
just kidding. I told my boss I'm going fishing mañana.
Tomorrow, call me Ismael. I am slipping my kayak into the friggen PACIFIC OCEAN for the very first time. am I nervous? yup. didnt help that my younger brother is deathly afraid of sharks and sent me a bunch of videos. the dude rushes into buildings to drag out drug dealers...sharks? pfft.. ever since I was a kid, I wanted to catch a Ling Cod. not sure why I dont just hand a boat captain $250 and go out on a boat, but the kayak thing is real. I saw a ling cod in a Chinese restaurant "aquarium", and my cousin Leon said.."we should catch one of those things, they are here in our waters". I was 11. (I dont love the party boat charter - like the cruise ship of vacations) then life happened. 8th grade was a *****. ![]() and I forgot about the lingcod. now? I can cook!!! lets do this. I am going with a salty kayak guy that used to work where I work. small world!! he talked like me, and I asked him.."you an engineer?" he retired and fishes full time and has it wired. he told me he would take me. but to watch the weather. he wants NEWBIE conditions. flat, light winds, etc. tomorrow we have it. lets go!! hope this complete stranger doesn't show up with a pile of gladiator videos. hahahha...

I thought you already did the ocean thing in rough, windy weather. Or was that just you and the kayak in the ocean, but without the fishing?
I'm looking forward to photos! Good luck! Make sure that you take your inner 11 yo with you so he can enjoy the catch!

I think so. target number 2 is a Vermillion. a bright red rock fish. the regulations are so challenging. fish ID, water depth, protected areas...makes my head hurt.

What was that video from the last few years where a guy in a kayak got swallowed by a whale that then spit him back up? That'd be a hell of a story! Hopefully, the only fish tale that you come back with is how you caught some.

I used to commercial fish. I’ve caught plenty of ling cod. The biggest was at least 4’ long and about 50 lbs. They live for years.
You don’t want to eat the big, old ones. They are full of worms. The smaller ones about 24” long are perfect and cook up great. We used to use a chrome jig like this 4-6” long to catch ling cod. Bounce it off the bottom about 6-8” and these territorial buggers will attack it. ![]()

I'm calling the guy taking me "YODA".
Yoda told me to buy a pound of frozen bait squid. that stuff stinks!! Yoda also told me to rig up a few bounce ball rigs. ![]() he also said, "bring a big ice chest, fishing is on fire!"

Never used bait for lingcod before. This is how the longliners catch them so it should work fine.
Make sure you post photos of your catch and have fun!

That looks like a red rock fish.
A ling cod is longer in the body and more of a mottled yellow / tan / brown color. EDIT - oh, I get it, you ALSO caught a ling cod. AWESOME!

My fishing partner got a legal Ling. Such a cool fish. I gave it to a neighbor that was salivating at it. Haha.

Very nice! Congrats on a day of successful fishing and not being eaten!
I took the grandsons fishing yesterday. THey caught some fish and had a great time. Our trip was A LOT simpler than yours!

He told me he’s never seen a shark. But what he has seen a few times is a seal go after peoples fish. They come on board the kayak for the easy meal, and swamp and flip the kayaks.
“No way!” The seal that came by me was gonna get a paddle to the face. It scared me and I flipped all my fish on board in 0.0000013 milliseconds. ![]()
