I did something similar a few years ago. Only drove 40 feet. Ring land pinched the ring, just like you said. I replaced the piston and used a die grinder to smooth out the head. A lot of work but less than $150 for the fix. If he keeps driving it the cylinder will probably get hurt .

I say Off with its head! No way I'd want to risk further damage.

Forgot to mention, its only a crate motor with mods, not the correct motor for the car, so ..... its disposable .
If this were my car, The motor would have been out Sunday afternoon and dissassembled, then, Id be all over market place, and all the other places where one could search, looking for a 427 or 454 to build . Make the input shaft of that m 21 put in some real work . Im supposed to talk with him this weekend. Ill let you know how it shakes out . I bet he drives it !! I love early pony cars . Second only to air cooled 911's in my book. He has mentioned selling this car, and Id be tempted , but I prefer 1969. I fulfilled most of my boyhood automotive fantasies in a Green 1969 z 28. Id love to take a stroll down memory lane
