Flight $186 Taxes, fees, charges $410

Trying to take a quick trip to Florence, flight cost is $186 but taxes, etc. are $410.

Seems strange. Lufthansa is the carrier. Used Travelocity.

Is this new?

My guess is that it's a weird breakdown, or maybe a new style of breakdown. Kind of like the places that charge an 18% fee for food but then say "don't worry about tipping".

$600 sounds more than reasonable to me for MA <> Florence. Is that a good price or normal price or...?

I've read finding cheap flights is a good use of AI.

I also recall, back when we still dressed up for flights (1970s) a cross country flight was in the $700 range.

To visit family in CA from NJ, in the 80's/90's it was alot cheaper to book two round trip flights through Vegas. NJ-Vegas & Vegas-San Diego.

For a domestic round trip flight, we just paid $125 in charges for $250 in tickets, $375 total.

You don't mention the dates.

We go to Europe quite often.

Prices range from 350 to 1500 round trip in the last year

Dates being the most determining factor

We don't look at the break down. It's the price. It is what it is

I think I'm a little behind on flights to Europe, I was expecting $500+ for the 10/2-6 dates. But it's not the cost, just the breakdown. If the numbers were flipped, curiosity would not have been piqued.

It's an expensive trip just to taste Florentine schiacciata (and have fun with gf) but probably worth it depending on the next few weeks.

I'll try AI'ing it. After I post a thread on some of the societal problems with AI and the dark side of an information economy.

You may want to try Google Flights, first. Put in the information and look at all of the flights offered. You can book it right from there but I always check the different airlines on their websites/apps that I see on GF before booking.

That’s a common game that low cost airlines play, they pull you in with a cheap advertised ticket and then get you on fees. Allegiant is one that I learned the hard way will up charge you for anything and everything that you bring on the flight, short of utilizing the prison pocket.

We fly allegiant often, as the destination airport is close to our second home. They lost hundreds of millions on their failed resort, prices noticeably creeping up, with less selection. All full flights now. We book way out in advance for the cheap flights, then change itinerary (I think $20) if we can't use the tiks.

Airlines don't make anything on the taxes and fees other than the float between when you pay the airline and when they have to pass it to the gov't. That ain't nothing, but I don't know how else they could do it. I always get Allegiant's most expensive package because I always check a gun and carry on a laptop and tablet with me. I always get the first row of the plane, so extra legroom. And they have non-stop flights from Mesa, AZ to South Bend, IN, where I work a lot. It's still pretty cheap at $200 each way, all in. I will probably be doing the Newark to Hong Kong non-stop again soon. That's gonna take some shopping around.

Recent Allegiant ticket breakdown. I don't remember the "Carrier usage charge" on older bookings:

Note: That's 2 people RT ABE to PGD. I actually think it's pretty cheap considering it was booked only 2 weeks before departure.

As with most things, I really don't care how they break it down. I care about my net out of pocket. $800 all in, RT from anywhere in the US to anywhere in Europe sounds pretty reasonable to me. So I'd book it and not think about it again.

'US September 11th Security Fee" reminds me of a fee on a car invoice that I was buying. "California CHP Fee."

I just looked at the guy and said if you want to sell a car, don't be ridiculous. There were others that didn't take much to bet removed. I guess airfare is not negotiable like cars and jewelry. That is unless you are booking an entire F! team. Look that up, interesting how many people they move around, when and where.

Early October is what I consider low season

My guesstimate would be 500 as a deal up to 1000 full fare

Is there a big race or major event around the area in those dates?

It's going to be a connecting flight most likely. Try another airline or fly to Bologna

^^^ that's why I was thinking $500 too. Dates aren't critical, I can play around. Have also considered flying in to England for work stuff and driving to Florence and flying out of there but I'm guessing that will be a lot more expensive. But more fun. Maybe.

I bought a ticket yesterday grr to srq on Allegiant for the last week of this month.
Round trip total was $152 (that's with purchasing a seat).

It's broken down to $52 for the r/t airfare and $100 for 6 different taxes and fees.

Hi
Regarding the OP.
What does clicking on the little circled "i" get you ?
You should be able to get a break down of the $410.41.
Certain Airports, (being nice monopoly businesses) have very expensive fees and may be better avoided.
See link below for Florence Airport fees.
Cheers
