Another Plumbing Question - 3" Fernco Donut Won't fit
What am I doing wrong? I've done this before without issue but this time is not working at all.
I have a 3" cast iron hub that "had" a 2" rusted out galvanized drain pipe connected with oakum and lead. I got that all seperated and ordered a 3x2 Fernco (see pics). The rubber Fernco is 4" outer diameter and definately will not work. I looked up the part number online because I thought they sent me the wrong part (miss-labeled) but it is indeed the correct part. There is no way this can be pounded into place as the rubber is 1" thick and not pliable at all. Why is it 4" and what should I be ordering? Cast Iron Bell/Hub: Opening Measures 3" ![]() Fernco Dount Ordered: ![]() Fernco - Outer = 4", Inner = 2" ![]() Thanks for any advice! |

What's the outside wall diameter of the pipe you're trying to connect to? They make one designed for vitrified or clay tile that has a larger bell on one end but accepts 3 or 4 inch PVC on the other. I had to use one at my son's house because the ID of the tile would accept 4" but the OD was much larger due to the wall thickness of the pipe.
I'm not following why that won't work. If the ID is 3", you put it in the iron pipe then press the 2" down into that to create the seal the way it looks to me.

The problem is that the 4" OD of the Fernco is to big for that 3" ID.
I think the cast bell is 2" "nominal" cast iron. See my response in the other thread.

Thinking about this, you may be right. The cast iron pipe is 2" but the bell hub is 3". I ordered a 2x2 fernco and hopefully, this works.

2" XHCI hub id is 3.06", 2" SVCI hub id is 2.94", use lube if its a little tight. The 2" x 2" push on gasket is correct.
