Tamales, Tamales and more Tamales, its time

What is your holiday ritual and your favorite types?

Our community in Baja has the kids from the orphanage over to eat lots of them in the clubhouse.

They come to do the La Posada songs and we visit the homes of our housebound seniors to cheer them up and eat some more.

Peace, love & fish tacos or Tamales.

We live in So Cal, but the family is from New Orleans. Our tradition for the last 30+ years has been tamales and gumbo on Christmas day. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't get much better than that!

I've had some really amazing tamales. I've bought tamales from random Hispanic ladies that were really amazing with great flavor. I've also had tamales from restaurants and a guy that sells them out of a truck year round for the past 25-30 years that had little to no flavor. If I get them in a restaurant I usually ask for them with sauce and cheese on top, but the good ones don't need it.

I wish I had a good, consistent source for great tamales.

And to go along with your last line, from the moment I first tried fish tacos, I've been hooked. I've been shocked to never had bad fish tacos. I think I've had them once or twice that were just mas-o-menos, but they are usually fantastic!

I know what good gumbo is, but would love to know what a good tamale is too!

Reminds me of Marcia Ball..... "Hot Tamale Baby!"

I'm fortunate to have access to great tamales. Some of the best I've had were sold from a large cooler being pulled in a little red wagon by someone's Abuelita. Those are the best along with their Elote'.

We have a place here in Pacoima that has great tamales. They sell a ton at Christmas time....

My favorite are the chile, cheese.

Yep, that's usually the best source!

I took a couple of tamale classes at the old Westlake Culinary Institute (Let's get cookin). The best I ever had. Hard work but so worth it. We made traditional tamales, but also seafood wrapped in banana leaves and the big surprise were chocolate brownie tamales! A very fun process because it involved a team of folks.
For store bought, all I can say is Somis Cafe in Somis California. Right next to the Somis Hardware store. After 38 years in Ventura County I moved last year to Murrieta. Still searching for a roadside or great local place to enjoy the real deal.

I take it back. There was a period that we were able to get excellent tamales at Whole Foods, I think our favorite flavor was green chili chicken. Unfortunately, after Amazon took over, the product line-up changed a lot, and it seemed like most of the changes were to get rid of stuff that we liked and replace it with stuff that we didn't.

I've never had "bad" tamales. I've only had great, good, and the closest that I've come to bad is "kinda bland".

What's a "plain corn tamale"? Is that a corn meal stick with no filling? With the right seasoning, that could be good.

I'm from Venezuela, so I have hallacas every year on Christmas Eve. I didn't grow up doing this, but after years of my mom and I making something different every Xmas Eve, we settled on hallacas. Hallacas are sort of like Very Fancy Tamales. They're more like Oaxacan tamales. I buy them from a local restaurant - every Venezuelan restaurant everywhere is guaranteed to have them before Christmas if you ask, whether you see them on a menu or website or not. I did make a huge batch one year with a friend and his mom and that was fun and memorable - they're a ton of work and making them is an inherently social activity.

PS the singular of tamales is 'tamal'.

!
Its getting harder to get them here as the good places are usually overwhelmed with long lines.

Pretty sure we went with the HEB Mi Tienda brand last year. They were pretty dang good.

For our friends here that aren't near the border, we aren't talking about the tamales that they make by machine in Mississippi and elsewhere with a crank machine.

Mississippi version
