Robert Redford, Oscar-Winning Actor and Director, Dies at 89

https://people.com/robert-redford-dead-at-89-7502405

"Robert Redford passed away on Sept. 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved," Cindi Berger, chairman and CEO of Rogers & Cowan PMK, tells PEOPLE in a statement. "He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy."

According The New York Times, who was the first to report the actor's death, Redford died at his home outside Provo on Tuesday morning. No cause of death was given, but Berger told the outlet in a statement that he died in his sleep.

Great actor. His work building the Sundance area and festival was notable.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was the one that really pushed him into the limelight

Then, some of my favs:
Downhill Racer
Jeremiah Johnson
The Candidate
The Sting
The Way we Were
The Great Waldo
Three Days of the Condor
All the President's men
Brubaker
Out of Africa
Spy Game

As a director:
Ordinary People
A River Runs Through It

Godspeed to one of the all time greats!

So sad to hear. His acting, directing, ethics, and care to bring others to the industry was second to none. It seems like everything he did was special. I particularly liked him in The Electric Horseman. Good time for this scene with the horse talk on Cash.

I was a fan going way back, especially as a director and for starting Sundance. He was a very talented director. RIP.

They are all going to die, meaning everyone we have shared to earth with over our lifetime. Most of the regular posters on this forum are around my age, (60s), so every public figure from our childhood and youth is really old if they are still alive. They're dropping like flies.

Agree. He brought something to a movie besides his looks. I can't say that about many.

And he and a whole bunch of others lived in a time when movies were made, not created. As they say, the camera sees all.

He was 11 years younger than Newman, who would be 100 this year if he was alive. They were both Porsche owners and fans, Newman obviously raced them. I sat in Redford's 911 when it was in for service at the old Bob Smith dealership in Hollywood in the late 80s, maybe '89? It was an absolutely gorgeous *paint to sample* and *interior to sample* M491 cabriolet, VW silver with cork full leather interior. He was a heavy smoker, the inside of the car smelled like an ashtray.

That car has to be out there somewhere.

Brad Pitt turned down The Bourne Identity to work with Redford in Spy Game.

Condor and President's Men are, IMO, about as good as 70's cinema ever got. So, so good.

Big fan of River Runs Through It as well. Heartbreaking story really.

He was one of the greats for sure, i hope his final thoughts were peaceful and happy as he surely deserves that for all the great work he gave us over the years.

My wife is especially sad because she always though I looked like him, so she felt a connection. If only. But she thought so, and that's all that matters.

Absolutely. I think I have written about the first time I saw the movie.

Condor came out when I was a senior in HS and I saw it in Aiken, SC with two friends of mine who were home from college for Thanksgiving. One went to Union College in NY where parts of 'The Way We Were' was filmed.

The theater was about half full, completely engaged...about the 3rd plot twist, I guy in his twenties stands up, looks around and asks, "Does anybody know what the F is going on!?!"

Perfect moment.

And, for RR, what a life.

What a great body of work. He was a man of strong convictions who used his platform for the causes he truly supported.

His wife Lola and children James and Shauna in 1971. His first child Scott passed from SIDS at 2 months of age. Amy was around a year old and not in this picture.

I remember him in Sneakers, The Last Castle, and Spy Game. Loved his performances there.
