Frankenstein

Guillermo Del Torro's version releases in theaters Oct 17th (including some IMAX), then to Netflix Nov 7th. The cast includes Oscar Isaac and Christoph Waltz. I'm up for it. I think the visuals will be first class.

Definitely looking forward to this one. Pan's Labyrinth was one of the truly great films of the last 25 years IMO.

DavidI 10-02-2025 10:19 AM

Looks great! I'm definitely going to watch it, David

GH85Carrera 10-02-2025 04:23 PM

I can tell from that preview, Young Frankenstein is closer to the original story, and a lot funnier!

It's supposed have a limited release on 10/17, but I can't find it until 10/23, and it's very limited.

There's a two part miniseries done by Hallmark in 2004 that's supposed to be the closest adaptation to Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Not highly rated, but it streams on Amazon, so I'll watch it. Supposedly, the creature isn't as ugly or mean as is should be. I should read the book. I've heard all kinds of weird stuff happens.

An interview with Guillermo del Toro from this morning's show. Extended interview at the bottom.

Seeing it tomorrow night. Since Netflix produced it, AMC and Showcase aren't running it. or they cant, not sure. Seeing it at a local movie house which I like supporting.

Crowbob 10-26-2025 03:28 PM

Looking forward to your review!

My review:

Guillermo del Toro movies I liked a lot better, in order:
Pan’s Labyrinth
The Shape of Water
The Devil’s Backbone
Hellboy
Nightmare Alley
The Book of Life

It's something you should see if you love del Toro.

Steve Carlton 10-28-2025 05:26 PM

I’m a fan of Del Toro, the amazing story, Oscar Isaac, and Christolphe Waltz. The surprise for me was Jacob Elordi, who played the monster. Del Toro delivers a lot of stunning visuals, but it’s too long at 2.5 hours. Waltz doesn’t get enough to work with and is wasted. The old blind man is terrific and finds the monster’s humanity. The monster is extremely powerful and indestructible, and reflects a child’s needs, sad heart, and enormously forgiving nature. Not perfect, but very good.

stevej37 10-29-2025 02:32 PM

I see that it's on Netflix next week...I'll watch it then.

If it even comes somewhat close to 'Pan's Labyrinth'...it'll be worth watching.

.

flatbutt 10-29-2025 02:38 PM

So nice to have a remake that isn't Spiderman. :D

It's not even somewhat close. or vaguely close. in fact it doesn't have any of the magic his other movies do. but you should see it.

Agree...saw it last night. The visuals were top notch.
I paused it when I thought I was over halfway thru it.....the progress bar was at a quarter.:)

Steve Carlton 11-08-2025 08:18 AM

I’ve just starting to watch it on Netflix and am enjoying it more. I’m not expecting magic from Mary Shelly’s story, which is gothic science fiction horror. Del Toro’s movie is perhaps the most faithful version so far.

sc_rufctr 11-09-2025 05:11 AM

Just finished watching it... Really well done. I enjoyed it immensely.
The sets, costumes and special effects were excellent!

- IMO the best version of Frankenstein yet.

I thought the only good acting in the entire movie was Elordi as the monster. Everyone else was either overacting (Isaac) or wasted (Waltz) or confused (Goth).

But the real issue is the characters had no connection to each other, they just all shambled through the storyline. If it had even a tiny amount of magic and connection like the relationship between Elisa and the monster in Shape of Water or Ofelia and the faun in Pan's Labrinth, it woujld have been absolutely brilliant.

Elordi mastered Frankenstein but he no partner to dance with. Not one.

Steve Carlton 11-09-2025 09:10 AM

Did you miss the part with the old blind man or with Victor in the last half hour?

Shaun @ Tru6 11-09-2025 09:32 AM

those had none of the electric, magical, whimsical power of del Toro's past relationships IMHO.

Taking the grandiose scenery and filmaking out of the equation, this movie could have been mistaken for any other average director.

I don't expect the same thing from a great director in every movie he makes. Some are going to be better than others, too. Do you have an example of the past relationships to post?

Shaun @ Tru6 11-09-2025 01:40 PM

Yes, a few posts back: Elisa and the monster in Shape of Water and Ofelia and the faun in Pan's Labrinth.

Making Frankenstein was his life's ambition so I expected it to reflect that.

NY65912 11-09-2025 02:24 PM

Watched it last night. I kinda liked it. The movie was interesting and entertaining up until the explosion of the castle, 2/3. The last third was over played and campy. We needed more of the old man and the monster, less of everything else. It could have been 30 minutes shorter as well.

A ranking of the 20 best Frankenstein movies.
The new one came in at 10.
Young Frankenstein at 3

Different stories. Different relationships. I think Del Toro gave a gothic horror novel the best interpretation to date. Personally, I like sci-fi and horror. I enjoyed the fact that the villian was the creator and the sympathetic character was the creature. Elordi spent 10 hours per day in makeup.

Brilliant character development from del Toro in days gone by

I remember watching, Flesh of Frankenstein, #15, when it came out in the mid 70s. I recall it was gory, and one guy ran out of the theater retching. The movie was awful.

One of the better ones; "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" (1994) with Robert De Niro as The Creature.

911 Rod 11-11-2025 06:31 AM

I dunno. It was entertaining I guess. 1/2 way through it turned into a Tim Burton production.

Steve Carlton 11-11-2025 02:18 PM

I thought it got better and better all the way to the end. I felt a lot of empathy for the creature, which isn't the usual Frankenstein movie path.

billybek 11-11-2025 05:40 PM

It took me two sittings to get through the film. It was enjoyable but I agree that it lacked the magic that the others had.
