Yep. I read that he had suffered a bad fall at his studio and had bleeding on the brain, was on a ventilator and not improving. So sad, we just never know when...

I saw KISS in concert in Spokane in 1990 (with Winger and Slaughter as opening acts). It was quite the show...

50 years ago, KISS made a surprise visit to Cadillac High School’s Homecoming in Northern Michigan.

My favorite possession in 1977 was my prismatic Kiss belt buckle. Purchased in Chicago while on my 8th grade graduation trip.
I AM your Doctor of Love! RIP Spaceman!

First record I bought with my allowance money - the 45 of Shout It Out Loud, played on my Fisher Price turntable. RIP, Ace.

I have a 45rpm of "Dr Love". "Take Me" is on the B side.

I saw KISS 3 times and if I remember correctly, Ace and Peter were there for all three.
First was in the 80's. I was 15 and Wendy O'Williams and The Plasmatics opened for them. Next was the 90's. One of the best shows I've seen. My wife said now I get why all the boys in the neighborhood liked KISS. Each had really long solo's and just really seemed to be into the show. Then last time was a few years ago and they were really looking their age. God speed Ace.

In the late 80s, Ace would frequent a small bar & grille in Yonkers, NY. He was a surly drunk at the time and would post up at a table, by himself, and slowly get completely ****-faced. Any celebrity status he had (“see that guy? that’s Ace Frehely!”) wore off quickly for the regulars... (“see that guy?” That guy’s a ****”). Probably fine with him that way as well. He was out of KISS for 15 years before he cleaned up.
Another datapoint from my childhood passes on. RIP

The current guitarist for KISS is a local guy: Tommy Thayer. He had a tribute KISS band. Ace was such a mess that Thayer was hired to re-teach Ace KISS songs before some tour years back. Ace was in such bad shape, he never recovered his skills and Thayer got a new job. But that is all off topic.
RIP Ace. Addiction is rough. |
