What hit the windshield at 36,000 feet?
A meteor or space junk?

Note how big the impact area is: That was probably space junk.
A meteor that size would have destroyed the plane.

My guess would be a weather balloon or its payload.

A piece of another airplane flying at 37,000 feet?

Whatever it was, it was probably a BIG SURPRISE to the folks in the cockpit when it happened. When you're at 35k+ feet, I suspect you never expect to run into anything.

The impact looks like larger and softer material. Or a piece of lighter man-made materials.
-I assume the entire outer shaded glass was shed. -The large circular portion of the middle glass is obviously the contact point. There is no centralized hardened impact indication like any solid metal object with weight would cause, and would penetrate into the cockpit. -There is a lack of impact around the window frame from the first strike. -The 'brow' skin being pulled back indicates a secondary bounce, and an object with more than one centers of mass. It's not a wing strike and small drones wouldn't be that high. There is an African buzzard that reaches that height but wrong location and would leave blood. Space ice or maybe a piece of panel might make that result. Material analysis ftw

I’ve heard stories of geese caught in updrafts, freezing to death but still gliding along at very high altitudes.

It's not a question of where it grips it....It's a simple question of weight ratios!
