Where were you 62 years ago today?
I had just stepped out of school in 4th grade to walk home. One of the mothers of a classmate came wheeling up in her car with the window down. She had her arm out the window and hollered...."The President has been shot"
I can still picture her to this day...even though I only knew later who she was. Got home and watched tv and only then found out that he had died...a sad day.

On the hill across the road from our house. My brother came and told us the terrible news.

Sent home in bus with no reason from Coy Elementary School, Oregon, Ohio. Pretty sure right down the street from you.
Found out why after getting home. I don't remember ever hearing about a backup plan if a parent was not at home but it was second grade for me and I was not consulted. :-)

My school was a two room school that had K thru 9 grades. Six in my class.
No bus for us at all. It was a little over a mile to home...so not so bad for me.

I was working alone on a jobsite in Weschester County in New York for a company that built custom homes. I forget what I was doing there at the time. The superintendent, Watt Horton, arrived and walked over to me. He said the President had been assassinated, and I thought at first he was going to tell a joke. I asked if it was a hoke, and he said it wasn't and that Kennedy had been shot in Texas. The hair stood up on the back of my neck. I couldn't relate to it. Later on I watched the funeral on a black & white TV. It was all very disturbing and disappointing.

My story is very typical.
But, the damage done had only just begun, still have yet to get over JFK, RFK & MLK.

Driving in town...hearing the news on the radio, I just pulled over to the curb, staring at the radio...

I was in Jr High, 7th grade I think, history class with Miss Loftus who was of British origin I believe.
They announced it over the PA system. Sad day at school for sure. Lots of speculation as to what had happened as they didn't tell us much beyond that he'd been assassinated. The following days were some of the most somber days I've ever experienced.

We were told in our 3rd grade class. I remember the utter sadness that prevailed upon the entire school. It was very papable
We watched everything on the TV that night, including LBJ's taking of the oath while we ate dinner. Very sad and a turning point in our history.

In 3rd grade in San Marcos, TX. The teacher was called to the hall, and burst out crying. She sobbed through tears that Kennedy was dead to the class. All the girls burst out in tears as well. My dad was upset of course, but mostly because Johnson was now the President.
As just a kid, I did not really understand what the country had just lost. Now, as a geezer and having learned some history, Kennedy saved us from WW3 for sure. If he had listened to the generals that wanted to attack Cuba, Russia was ready, and it would have sparked WW3. We missed WW3 by just the narrowest of margins when Kennedy ordered a stand-down of the military.

I was in Mrs. Soffer's 6th grade. The announcement came over the PA and she just walked out. I sat there wondering "what now?"

Yeah, it hard to see a teacher showing emotion like that. Mine was like my Grandmother's age then and it was the first time I saw that side of her.
