Nails in subfloor and stairs are usually the source of squeaks. Expansion and contraction due to temperature swing loosen the fasteners just enough for the wood to ride up and down on the static nail. Wood paneled walls would make the same noise if you could walk on them. Subfloors and stair components should always be glued. Even if you screw down subfloor it should be glued as the edges of plywood rubbing together can occasionally produce noise
