how did the early beetle figure into your life, and lead you to the porsche marque?

My dad had a bug when I was a kid. Always stalled when he hit a deep water puddle and he would have to get out and dry out the distributor cap. The only bug I owned was when I lived in Germany. Painted it pearl white with red to orange flames over the hood and front fenders!

actually, if it weren't for the old beetle, I might never have bought a 944. Let me explain...

My friend Ben got a 1970 Beetle for his 16th birthday; his parents bought it from Bristol Motor Works' head mechanic, Dennis. About 3 years later, when Ben was bringing his car in for a regular service, he saw that Dennis had a red 944 and a white 944 for sale. The rest is history.

If you want to talk about history with a VW Beetle, ever try to cram 4 people with their golf bags, and bookbags, into one of those things?!?

had a 67 bug that I bought w/120K miles on it, and sold 7 years later with 250K. No rebuild. Driven rudely. Put away wet. Amazing car. Had a 63 bug that I did a partial baja conversion on. 6v electrical systems suck.

The great thing about these cars was that anything that went wrong was either 2 days or $200 to fix. Easy to work on, plenty of parts, and surprisingly fun to drive.

I once bought a mid-seventies bug (It was the 75,000,000 Anniversary Edition) cabriolet, which would only run on 2 (and occasionally 3) cylinders. It was a total bomb!

I sold it about 12 hours after I bought it, because a co-worker fell completely in love with it, much more in love than I was. She's still got it today...

Rolled it.
Yeap I rolled my bug, tried to explain to my mom that the swingaxles didnt make the bug the best handling car.

After that I learned bodywork, smoothed the roof and fenders out. rattle can prime/paint job and the car didnt look that bad.

I then drove head on into a tree to avoid rear ending a car when my brakes failed.

I then bought another bug with about 120K on the clock Drove it till I got a "civilized" car '66? mustang convertible ( wish I still had that one)

Bugs are great cars, Id like to pick up a clean pre-safety bumber one
