Schwarzenegger for CA. Govenor: "A farse?"
Okay, to be honest, I have mixed feelings here:
1) On one hand, yes, he's successful; and can attract the big business California needs to get back into a positive economy. 2) On the other hand, will anyone take him seriously? 3) Star attraction helps. 4) I still barely understand his English. His grammar needs work. Anyone else?

My opinion: He's a very savvy man, with lots of tricks up his sleeves . . .not just [Austrian accent]biceps bulging like mountain peaks[/Austrian accent]
He has been obsessed with politics for years. He's won't be another Sonny (or Mary) Bono.

Sonny Bono was actually a decent politician. Arnold is all ego. He can win, but he will never succeed. Hollywood and Sacramento are very different places.
I'm still hoping for Downtown Willie Brown to run... |

This recall is a joke. It is too easy to get a recall on the ballot, thereby throwing the state into chaos and giving special interests more threatening power. Once the elected official is recalled, it is too easy for someone else to get elected with a very small percent of the vote. Whether or not you like the idea of Gray Davis being recalled with 51% of the vote, do you like someone else being named the new governor with just 10% of the vote? So actually more people would have voted to keep the old governor than would have voted for the new governor? Doesn't make sense.
I don't particularly like Gray Davis. Admittedly, I'm not sure how much better his competition would have done, given a crashing stock market, a falling state economy, a disastrous electricity deregulation (which he inherited from prior governors), and the Bush Administration deliberately doing nothing to help the biggest state (perhaps in hopes of undermining California Democrats and helping Republicans?). Still, I do not think Gray Davis has distinguished himself. But I think the medicine is much worse than the illness. It's not just trading Davis for The Terminator, it's inviting repetitions of this recall circus at all different levels of state government. Our state government can barely get anything done anyway, this will just tie them up in worse knots.

I'm curious to see if Arnold will be a straight talker when asked questions or if he'll be giving more of what he thinks people want to hear types of answers or witty replies like he does on the talk shows. Kind of makes me think back to when our former Governor Jesse Ventura was running for office.

1) Increasingly, economics and the governorship or presidency are disproportionate - lately, they do not seem that related. 2) It is feared Ca. is in big financial trouble that can't be patched back up with a recall and potentially a new governor. This is the Bush Administration's fear of the recall: that a republican will be nominated, and nothing will get better. 3) Arnold is the best GOP hope: very visible, likeable, etc. But if he doesn't get the job done, it's very bad for the Republicans - this is the main fear the Bush Administration has.

But, OH, Keerist NO on Brown. That man is dangerous. You think you have seen enough of the good ol' boys club in Saramento with Davis and all of his favoratism, you ain't seen nothing yet if Brown got the job. If we still had Communists around, he'd have them in the damn state government too. Wait, that might already be the case.......... |

I want Brown for the amusement factor...he's about the only one I know of that could match Arnold for buffoonery and verbal histrionics.

Sorry, the CA govm't doesn't amuse me. I have to live here. Someone above said A.S. could bring business back to CA. How would he do that, put them in a movie? We will lose business to AL, GA, TN, NC, SC, AK, etc. as long as they have a cheap labor pool and less stringent worker's comp requirements. Is A.S. gonna disband the system? I think not. the damage is done, the liberals are here and the state is down the toilet. I live here because someone near and dear to me wants me to. And I can make a living as easy as shooting fish in a barrel. I've been other places, it's a tough life in many states. But I was born here as a 2nd gen CA'ian. It isn't like it used to be, ridin' waves with our Katin's on and cruisin' Sunset at night. Pumpin' gas for gas money, having to wash the front and rear windows at that. Arnold can't bring that back. No one can because there aren't enough poeple who understand what it is that it should be. They mostly came from somewhere else and brought their ideas with them. That's like putting a non-native fish in the lake. It'll never be the same lake. Sonny Bono was a local, Pete Wilson was a local, Ronnie Regan was a local and Jerry Brown is a local, whether they were born here or not. If CA is the 8th largest econmy in the world, it would do well to be soverign and tax hell out of everything going in and out. One more thing, CA has grown by some 3 million since about 1998 while the amount of people moving out of the state exceeds the no. of people moving in from other US states. What does that tell you?

The news had sound bites of A.S. today. He repeated lines from "Terminator One" and "Terminator Two," in his campaign speech. "I'll be back..." and "Hasta la vista, baby!"
He also made references to "Pumping Iron." In all honesty, I'm starting to like the guy. I mean, things could be worse: we could have Angelyne in there. And everyone knows some whacky Californians will vote her in. Zeke is right: more people are leaving than coming in. They're going to Oregon, Washington State, Arizona and Nevada. Among the reasons: 1) Better job market 2) Less urban sprawl But like I said, I like A.S. I don't believe he'll fix anything, and might ruin Republican chances for the state in the future. But that's far in the future. I'm going to have fun trying to understand his accent. ![]() Hey Adam Chaplin: with all this going on, do you still want to move out here? ![]()

Zeke, I agree with much of what you said, but I have to take exception to at least one point. I'm a 3rd generation San Diegan (now living in LA), so I know what it used to be like. But don't laud "Mayor Pete" for anything. He is one of the main reasons that San Diego has morphed into a hideous "LA South". His insane pro-growth policies and living in the pocket of developers like Corky MacMillan resulted in the sprawl that is choking one of the most beautiful urban places on earth.
btw, I didn't wear Katins (can't remember the brand of surf shorts I used to live in), but did have original Churchill fins, and my first boogie board was a kit you bought from Tom Morey. |
