Paul, in the first pic of him, it looks like the first 10" of the stick from the tip back is 5-10 degrees out of alignment with the base. Is it an optical illusion? Is he pressing down on the middle with his left hand? It looks like there's some downward pressure there from the look of his index finger. Just curious.

NOT an optical illusion...many of the top pros & skilled amateurs bend the stick when breaking...the stroke is downward for "draw" english, (Shane used low left tip position on the cue ball on most of his break shots in this tournament) that hopefully hops the cue ball in a manner that it remains center table giving good position for a first shot. Also why they use a cue for breaking, another cue for playing...only so many break shots like this in a wood shaft, since the shot breaks down the wood fiber. It's just that the break is such a fast & powerful shot, most watching don't notice the bending of the cue. SVB no longer worries about the cost of cues...he gets paid well into 6 figures annually to use a specific production brand.

How good is SVB? At the US Open, he beat the great Efren Bata Reyes of the Phillipines...Efren has tons of world titles, but now SVB has won the US open 4 times, tied with Earl Strickland for the most Open wins.

Here's Efren...getting older, but he still demands a LOT of respect in any pool tournament held throughout the world:

Next up, Dan Louie...now living in Seattle, but a former world champ who strikes fear in money players anywhere.

But today..right now? SVB gets my vote as the best overall pool player in the USA.

Okay, so he's just made contact and the cue ball has already hit the one and is hopping back... so he lifted the base of the stick as part of his motion to get the draw.

It looks like the tip is resting on the felt. With that much downward pressure on it, I'm wondering how he doesn't damage the felt.

Is his stroke so precise that there is no forward motion of the tip by the time it contacts the felt?

Yeah, top level players are that good...the tip "skids" along the felt a bit, but they don't tear the cloth.
Here's a youtube analysis of "Hillbilly" Byrant's break...probably the fastest cue ball break speed in pool...although now he's working on a more controlled break.
I watched a "rack your own" 9 ball match where Efren pocketed the 9 on the break 3 times in a row.

YouTube - Analysis of Charlie Bryant's Break Technique

(edit) From there you can find similar videos of other top player breaks...I just selected Hillbilly because his break is so damned powerful! Shanes break is more controlled but not as powerful...

forgot to random pic...video doesn't count, right?

Palmer model M...from their 2nd catalog. I bought mine in 1972 for $125...still have it, but seldom play with it, since my current cue has a much better hit. Considered a collectible these days...worth several thousand. Mines mint because I took a long break from playing shortly after buying it... Things like running a biz, raising a kid took precedence for a few decades.

..It all began when the nude man stopped the taxi by running out into the street in front of traffic. As the perplexed driver got out of the car to see what was going on, the naked man grabbed the vehicle's bumper and tried - without much success - to lift it off the ground.

As a crowd of puzzled onlookers gathered to watch the spectacle, the man continued in his efforts to lift the car. Eyewitnesses reported that he would sometimes shout 'please give me strength!' as he struggled with the taxi.

Yreka Dragon - Just north of Yreka, CA... on the east side of I-5 (by the northbound lanes when you are starting your ascent of the Siskiyous) stands a large metal dragon. The dragon is about as far north of Yreka as the large metal cow is south.
