Yes, that is Bruce Meyers. He invented the first fiberglass Dune Buggy in 1964 in his garage. The picture behind him is of number 3 Manx jumping for the famous Hot Rod photo shoot. That edition of Hot Rod sold more copies than any other before or since. I am piecing back together an original Meyers Manx to drive, (not trailer) across the US to Big Bear CA for the 50th celebration this July.

These pictures were taken this past Saturday at the Mall in Washington DC where Bruce's "Ole Red was #2 vehicle inducted into the historic register. It is the exact buggy he and Ted Mangels ran across the Baja breaking the bike records that started the Off Road Racing in the West.

Cool.

I helped my brother build a dune buggy in 1971 that was VW based but had no fiberglass. It was ugly but fun. That is what I learned to drive in. It was 100% home engineering.

That will be a HOT drive.

If you are driving through Oklahoma City, I would love to meet up with you. If your schedule includes a stop in the OKC metro area please send me a PM.

This is our tentative schedule. A couple from Canada will start the trip on July 1. Picking up 1 buggy from CT, one from Long Island NY, one from Philly PA. Then on to Columbus OH where one from NY will join and a buddy and I in my Manx. By the time we make it to CA, we will have about 15 buggy's and 3 support vehicles. The number 7th Moncooque Bruce made will join the group in Indy IN.

It is a bucket list thing for me.

Here is where I started on January 29, 2014. Built a fab table, bolted on a front VW suspension, then welded on a rear torsion housing.

Here is the complete self built tube chassis basically completed.

Here is how I found the original Meyers Manx II body. The body was certified by Bruce himself to be one of his.

After a lot of fiberglass work, Cabosil and sanding, the body is ready for paint.

There are some ambitious mileages listed in the itinerary for being in a dune buggy.
Good luck!

Agreed. Three days of hard driving followed by three days of short hops on CO. That is why a buddy is going to share the driving. The couple from Canada, will be making their 6th trip across the US in their buggy and have made the itinerary.

I have done 250 miles in a buggy with not so comfortable seats and was OK at the end of the day. I am going to install Scat Procar Classics seats that fully recline. The body is stretched a little and the chassis allows for the seat to go so far back, at 6'2", I have to pull the seat forward to be comfortable with the peddles.

Last year, 18 buggy's came from CA to NC in 7 days, They said every 1 to 1 1/2 hours they were stopping for the "older" riders to pee and eat, and fuel the buggy's, (10 gallon tank). It will certainly be an adventure.
