This actually is the P-38 Lightning(Fork-tail Devil, per the Luftwaffe ). A truly Bad-A$$ WW II fighter. Ret Gen Robin Olds is the only WW II Ace to shoot down a German plane dead-stick in one of these. ![]() ![]() His book is worth the read if your into the aviation thing. Here is a pic of the P-47 Thunderbolt, this too is a Bad-A$$ ![]() Thanks Kach22i for posting. Seeing these old baby's gives one that warm Fizz feeling. Both were huge in the European Theater. $5.00 score at the local Goodwill Store.
![]() Although he never flew a F-16, the signature was an added bonus. ![]() And for those that don't know who he is, he was right there in the same group as Gen Chuck Yeager during the famous flight tests back in the day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Tea anyone?
![]() If I recall, after the X1 was a distance out he would zoom climb directly in front of the B29, coming up from below, in his P80 chase plane.

![]() ^+1 Good call and good point. I totally had a monumental brain fart on that one. I recall that particular day. Just landed, got out of the plane, heard the sonic boom, then felt a small tremor that rolled through the area. Funny how things work out and one singular point in time.... ![]() A pilot who flew with Hoover told me he was actually the #1 choice for the supersonic flight but he had a prior commitment on the date of one of the tests. Apparently, either his kid's (or someone close's kid's) birthday party was the commitment he was determined to live up to.

If you ever get a chance to meet and talk with him, you would fully understand that's how he rolls. Had the distinct privilege to step aboard his motor home at the Reno Air Races several years back. It was such a surreal moment to find myself talking with Mr. Hoover and Mr. Clay Lacy. It had to be one of those "WOW!" Moments in my life..
