Dropped out of school, Submarines for a short time, ME degree, Aircraft in structural design.
Fuel cost as such was not an issue. Range was a significant design requirement. Meeting a proper area rule was an element of drag in transitional speed and supersonic, due to undesirable drag due to shock waves. In the wrong place, separation/ drag/ shock waves could ruin aircraft control also. Everytime I wanted to to change the outside mold line for better structure or cost, the first thing was to see if it would penalize aerodynamics and ruin the aerodynamic testing which defined the performance. I virtually always lost, especially when the change was near the max cross section or affected the tails and wings. You don't see a wasp waist just due to the extensive integration of the whole exterior surface. Quote:

Good news considering its a huge waste of money.
$19 billion a year so some a-hat can say yippee, look at us! Bah. Fund it with your own money if you want, but stop being so generous with mine. And keep PARF stuff in PARF. |

I also love the recent Star Trek/Star Wars movies but lets be honest they are just retreads. Somewhat ironic the "zombie apocalypse" has become a cultural icon (is that an American thing or international?) But thank gaud we will always have vampire movies! Why let the truth get in the way of some amusing B.S.
What countries still use Imperial, let's see? ![]() Yup Myanmar and Liberia are two countries we really want to be compared to! Also, everything in Engineering in this country is done in Metric, it’s pretty much just stuff sold to the public that’s still referred to in Imperial. Try find an Imperial fastener on any modern Domestic automobile, nope, not there unless it’s some weird legacy part. Cars are completely designed in Metric, with the exception of wheel size. We even use metric for rolling radius on tires. Of course Lockheed Martin really screwed the pooch when they received a contract from NASA (you know, an official Government agency) specifying that everything needs to me Metric, but they went ahead and provided information in Imperial units causing the very public embarrassment of crashing the Mars lander. There’s even a push to allow voluntary labeling of packaging in metric only. The UK seems to do OK with everything in Metric except speed in mph, why can’t we go that way too? But as I say, why let redneck rhetoric get in the way of truth? Also while we’re at it, what the hell is with the ass backwards system of dates here that go Month, Day, Year? The rest of the world and the US Government use the far more sensible increase system of Day, Month, Year. Stills screws my head in when I’m asked for my date of birth, I have to say it in full using April not ‘4’ otherwise I get it wrong and I’ve lived here for coming on 23 years now.

Everything in engineering is NOT metric in this country. Some is, quite a bit is not! Almost NONE of what i work with as an engineer is metric. Some US industries are like that. . ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by sammyg2; 01-26-2017 at 10:28 AM.. |
