My 5.4L has 97,000 miles on the O'riginal plugs and I ain't gonna touch them.
I'll trade it in before they get replaced.

Many suggest just loosening and retorquing them to avoid problems. We do see huge gaps develop which really affect mpg.

My 2007 F150 5.4 has the infamous 2 piece shielded 100K mile plugs. Steel plug shield fuses to aluminum head. After many miles and billions of heat cycles, plug breaks in the head when one tries to remove them. Broke 7/8 plugs, used special 'extraction tool' and was successful on 6/7 broken plugs. Had to pull the head to get the last one out. What a PITA!!!

Would love to talk to the ford / champion plug engineer that came up with that brilliant concept.

[QUOTE=rcooled;9159426]This is the Can-Am 917-30 that Mark Donahue drove to the closed-course lap speed of 221.16 MPH at Talladega back in '75...a record for that track that I think still stands today. It was disassembled and is now being completely restored at Canepa Design's race shop.

Seeing this makes me feel a LOT better about my welding.

When Carl Thompson had the chance to buy a 917 frame that had been lounging in a museum he said that they should send pictures of the welding. He said it was like this so he knew it was a factory weld job and thus a real 917 frame!
