Hi Paul,
Man, that's crappy about the event at the corral. Funny how naive some in the PCA are. Hell, your car made history for Porsche. The early seventies were the golden years for the marque.

I'm part of the Cascade chapter and know the yellow C4. Its owner is one of the nicest guys I know in the PCA. What happened with him? Maybe a misunderstanding? The reason I say so is he is an avid car collector and states how much he loves my car, which is nothing much compared to yours. Give us another try, some of us are OK.

That's the problem with people who buy sports cars for status instead of a sporting use of the machine.

Maybe Porsche should start selling cars at a deep discount with a provision they get driven hard (on the track), by the owner, a minimum of 7 days a year? They could even monitor use such as RPM, speed in gear, milage etc. Not in a big brother sort of way, and not to encourage speeding, but to "give something back" to the grassroots enthusiasts.

They guy who wants it for his mistress or just to HAVE A VALET PARK IT FOR HIM in front of a trendy joint would pay full price or even a premium equivalent to the enthusiast's discount.

That would give everyone what they want.

I agree! Porsche should just sponsor all P-car ownersd with 1 track day per year. They should make a big event out of it.

Harlequin, Paul and others:
Regarding the 'early 911' sitting next to the new 996.

I am surprised they LET the 996 into the Corrall!

Not to dis any 996 owner here, but what happened to respect for the marque, not the model?

Some of you poke fun at the 914 and 944 - but many believe that had it not been for the volume of sales of both the 914 and the 924/944, Porsche may have gone under!

Just my $0.42,
-Z.

Bigrubberjeep, that 2nd pic was not needed in this thread. For all of you who haven't been to Austin, meet Leslie! Congress Ave. near 6th street, everyday of the week. It even ran for mayor awhile back.

My intention was not to have Porsche lose any money by giving away free stuff and sponsorship, but rather having a type of contract/lien on the car. The only way you would get that discount would be if you somehow show your entry/use of the car on a track. If you fail to do so, then you would not be fulfilling your promise which gave you that big discount in the first place. Then you would be required to pay the difference.

For simplicity's sake, if a GT3 stickers at $100K, the individual who agreed to actually "use" the car, would only pay $70K. The guy who only wants to pose in the car would pay $130K. That way Porsche did not lose any $$. I know this is utopia but what else would discourage/differentiate the snooty 911 drivers from the actual enthusiast who just can't afford to enjoy the machinery? The guys buying the car to show off would not be deferred by the price since if they can swing $100K then $130K would not make them blink either (probably).

By the way, Mazda and Mazdaspeed have an arrangement where you can get fairly good deals on parts if you show you track your car. Meanwhile, we have to BEG dealerships to order "plasticky" brake deflectors.... sheesh.

There will always be snobs and those that feel superior by what they consider to be better. I would not let that kind run me off.

"Brillo" is actually the nickname my wife and I gave our SC. The original owner didn't know how to use a power polisher and made it look like it had been washed with a Brillo pad. It is light blue metallic, so in certain lights it looks great, in others it is really bad. Some day I plan to have it painted. But I'm not in a rush. The way it is, I don't worry about having it get messed up.

Your car looks fantastic. What would he have said about mine

My experience with PCA has been quite the opposite, folks that enjoy the marque

people still badmouth the 944, even today? I was under the impression that it was finally starting to get the respect that it deserved

I never even knew it LOST respect. It has always been a great handling car, the 968 only highlighted that. Once 400hp turbo cars became more "common" it gained even more respect due to the potential.

Dave:
I wish all 911 owners felt the same way about the 'lowly' 944.

Often I hear folks in my PCA region (NNJR) joking around about them thar 'wasser-pumpers' and that's ok. But once in a while, a guy shows up in an air-cooled 911 and thumbs his nose all all the 'Porsche wannabes.' Most often, this type of person doesn't last long in the club!

Besides, when it comes to track driving, I never passed a 911 I didn't like! (Did I just say that?!?)

when it comes to Porsche snobbery, i've never really encountered it... every 911 driver i've talked to loves all Porsches... although it is kinda hard getting a wave from a 996/Boxster/Cayenne driver in my area.

Personally I'd love a 944 or 968 as my other car. The 944 would be great for the value, the 968 a bit more refined, unless I could afford the CS. On the other hand, I wouldn't really want to give up my Rabbit, either. Time for a garage...?

"unless I could afford the CS"

Unfortunately, the CS was never available in the US. Grey market, perhaps?
