Steve Austin, A man barely alive. We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better...stronger...faster."

The opening sequence of The Six-million Dollar Man featured NASA's 1967 footage of a real-life accident of the Northrop M2-F2 lifting body tumbling end for end down the runway caused by piloting error. The pilot, Bruce Peterson actually survived reasonably unscathed, although he lost an eye due to an infection acquired while in the hospital.

The opening credits actually used footage of two different lifting bodies; the HL-10, shown dropping away from its carry plane, and the M2-F2 shown in the unstable flight/crash sequence. (The aircraft was actually referred to as being an “HL-10” in the series, and the real HL-10 was used in a later episode; however, in the 1987 TV film The Return of the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman Austin refers to it as the "M3F5", which is the name used for the aircraft that crashes in the original Cyborg novel.)

Yep, they say he hit the runway at 250 mph.

When I was a kid I played at Boysen park (named afer the guy who invented the boysenberry).
They had a real 1954 Grumman F9F-6P "Cougar" (127484) for the kids to play with, including sharp metal corners, empty engine bay to crawl through, it was cool. Later they decided that reality wasn't safe so they concreted over the whole thing, pissed me off. This is what it looks like now:

and this is what it looked like before:

Here are few more...

Wow - watching that opening sequence for TSMDM in 2007 really brings back memories. And it's a little weird thinking that a video of the death of a courageous man was shown over and over again on TV - not saying that it's wrong, maybe just a little insensitive. Maybe I'm all wrong here...

daepp, that pilot did not die. He lost one eye due to an infection in the hospital but basically walked away from the crash.

That SR-71 wasn't my photo but I believe that double-cockpit plane is a trainer.

It's the predecessor to the SR71 - the A12.

Interesting note - in the book Skunk Works it was revealed that the actual name from the beginning was RS-71 - But when Johnson felt the need to disclose its existence, he blew it and called it the SR-71. After the gaff, the Skunk Works/AF were forced to change their name for it = at the cost of many hundreds of thousands of dollars in the days before CAD etc. Every contractor had to change their plans, documentation etc all because the Johnson administration didn't want the boss to look bad.

Glad the hear he survived - and amazing that he did! Now I have to figure out who Edwards was.

BTW - for anyone interested in this - or other - ground breaking planes I cannot over emphasize how good Skunk Works (the book) is.

Test pilot killed while testing one of the Northrup Flying Wings way back when.

Last note in the log book said he was going to try a "stall" next. The other test pilot had it flip and tumble on him when he tried it and told him not to do it. The History Channel has a good episode on this.

Originally known as the Muroc Army Air Field, the base was renamed on December 8, 1949 in memory of U.S. Air Force test pilot Glen Edwards, who died while testing the Northrop YB-49.

WASHINGTON - Tiny robots programmed to act like roaches were able to blend into cockroach society, according to researchers studying the collective behavior of insects. Cockroaches tend to self-organize into leaderless groups, seeming to reach consensus on where to rest together.

For example, when provided two similar shelters, most of the group tended to gather under the same one.

Hoping to learn more about this behavior, researchers led by Jose Halloy at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, designed small robots programmed to act like a cockroach.

The robots didn't look like the insects and at first the roaches fled from them, but after the scientists coated the robots with pheromones that made them smell like roaches the machines were accepted into the group, nesting together with the insects.

Given a choice, roaches generally prefer a darker place and the robots were programmed to do the same.

When given a choice of a darker or lighter shelter, 75 percent of the cockroaches and 85 percent of the robots gathered under the darker one.

Then, to see if the robots had really become part of society and could influence group decisions, Halloy and colleagues programmed them to prefer shelters with more light.

The result, the lighter shelter was preferred by the mixed group 61 percent of the time, while the cockroaches alone picked it just 27 percent of the time.

On the other hand, in 39 percent of cases the robots, despite being programmed to prefer a lighter shelter, joined the cockroaches under the darker one.

The findings were reported in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

------------------------------

I submit that if roaches can be infiltrated, so can we.
