Recall Delayed...

I guess we'll have the usual suspects to kick around a little longer...

8 months more needed to "set up" an election . . .Really!?
I suppose it is only fair . . .and hey, why not just postpone the recall until the regular govenertorial election.

Floridians are soooo happy now!

I have a feeling that at the end of everything, Davis will stay put.

Me too, dd74. Ironic that the ACLU case stated that the recall would "disenfranchise minority voters."

I guess it's just dandy with them that the million people who signed the recall petition are disenfranchised, though.

Then again, the 9th Circuit Court of appeals is infamously biased to the left, in addition to being incorrect a good portion of the time, and it gets overturned with regularity by the Supremes.

Sigh...California.

. . .
No kidding.

Apparently Davis found way to screw the people of California . . .yet again.

Davis must be getting something big to be so scrappy, (keeping the power) . . .he sure isn't getting popularity out of the deal.

It's interesting you say that, Dr., because some maintain Davis' popularity has gone up in the last week - which is incorrect. Popularity for The Recall has gone down in the last week, though that could easily (and mistakenly) be translated as support for Davis.

As I might have said in another thread, this recall stems from emotions whipped up by Issa (who's nowhere to be found, incidentally). Now, things are starting to calm down.

As far as the decision to delay, all the Supreme Court needed was for Clinton to come into the fray. Heck, he might as well have made the decision for the Supreme Court.

I wonder if Davis has had any second thoughts about signing the illegal immigrant drivers' license bill now that he might not need the Latino vote?

My state of Nevada used to take a California Drivers' License as a basis for a Nevada license.

Not any more.

Now, SS#, birth cert and / or US Passport, proof of insurance, AND some sort of proof of prior driving experience (read: not necessarily a CA DL).

Now that the door is open to a DL in California, is the requirement for proof of insurance required for a license? I imagine not. Everyone might want to check up on their UM limits.

What a mess.

Issa bailed when Arnie came to town. He used the "I was just working for the good of the masses" line, but it's pretty clear this was all about his ego and aspirations...I laughed when he pulled out.

Gawd bless the 9th circuit. Yes, they get overturned alot, but given the right bias found in almost every other appellate court, it's good to have someone poking around making people think.

The recall is an asinine waste of time and money.

I disagree. I pay a lot of taxes in this state and I find the prospect of tossing a Governor out on his ass thoroughly amusing. The recall is a better use of my tax dollars than the inept fiscal management by Gray Davis and friends.

Accountability, even if costly, is satisfying for this taxpayer.

How anyone can call it a waste of time and money is beyond me. It's a constitutional process that got revved up when people got upset enough with the government to call for a change. The fact that we just had an election is irrelevent. It's a legal process.

Yeah, Issa bankrolled it. Do you think he would have done that if he had not seen support from the people? It was a rational decision.

Which is more assinine: Gray Davis spending $1 million to kick Riordan out of the primary so he could compete with Simon, or Issa spending $1 million to start a legal proceeding that's been on the books for decades?

Both of the above actions were legal. They were both driven by opportunists and a lot of money. I'm not complaining about either one.

But, which action respects the will of "the people," and which one limits their choices? I know which one I consider assinine....

Colin: it's a double-edged sword, my friend. What, any longer, represents the will of the people in politics? Issa bank-rolled a cause that until it became news, was little known, if at all. That to me is personal interest. Meanwhile, because of the State Supreme Court (SSC) decision today, McClintock says the SSC is pandering to liberal concerns.

BTW: recalls aren't time-honored in U.S. history. When was the last recall? North Dakota, right? And over 100 years ago at that.

A crazy thought occurred to me however: Arnie might be a dirty player. And why not? He's got ego and star power that feeds even more ego to him. He's publicly stated that McClintock can either join him in a unifed Republican affront or be defeated (read: "terminated").

So why shouldn't he have "suggested" to the State Supreme Court that this recall be delayed, and only on basis of the "chad" issue as in Fla. In the meantime, with this delay until March 8, he'll starve his rivals of their funds. Cruz Bustamante is already stumbling - he's losing momentum one week after he pulled ahead. And McClintock doesn't at all have Arnold's money and influence. As for the others under the category of "also ran," Ariana included, they'll fade away, bankrupt.

McClintock, to say the least, is furious. He calls the 9th Circuit Appellate "a laughing stock." (sic). Ariana and Cruz are for it, but what do they have to lose? Gray is ambivalent. He's acting like he's in the catbird seat, which he might be: momentum is waning for this recall.

Things will become clearer in the next 48 hours. Why? Because by then this State Supereme Court decision will be in the hands of the Federal Courts. That's when you can expect some real cannon fire.

Soapbox on:

I'm just glad that I was born and live in North Carolina. I'm registered republican and sit politically in the middle of the two fronts but on some topics, I must vocalize.

It is truly amazing that the common public is so easily swayed by a **** talking politician. I say that Davis is allowed to stay in office just for the simple reason that there is no way he alone can save the state of CA. The debt is so huge, every person will have to cough up a few grand to catch up.

He will crash and burn along with his liberal socialists and it will be proven that their Robin Hood mentality only serves to fleece the public '...in the name of the children.' What a load of crap.

Newsflash: Davis Has FLEECED The Citizens of California. It's Time For The Public To Take A Stand And Deal With This Moron. He Wants MORE VOTES So He'll HAVE A JOB FOREVER So He Spends Money To Get Votes. Hellooooooo. McFlyyyy???

He should be forced to clean the garbage along all the nations highways for the rest of his life. He's basically a 'legal criminal.'

Soapbox off.

So I guess you won't be moving out here anytime soon, huh Eric?

The issues are too vast for any one person to solve. What any of the candidates plan to do is "patchwork" to make things a bit more tolerable, whatever that might entail.

We've already killed our golden goose, by slaying big business. I imagine some of that can be blamed on Davis, but who knows? Liberalism has, by late, killed this state, but 20 or so years ago, conservatism was the culprit.

One way or the other, I'm not leaving. The comedy here is too damned funny.

Good ole Willie Brown said he was going to start a recall of his own if a Repblican won the recall election.

Look at Arnolds Brain Trust...Warren Buffet...2nd Richest man in America, and George Schultz...ex Secratary of State.....Hmmm...think they might be able to come up with some ideas for bringing business back to CA? With the Bully pulpit and veto power of the Govenatorship Arnold shure could put the screws to the Libs in the state gov.

However if Bustamonte gets in... The Injuns will be taking over Sacramento and CA can count on more Injun Casinos...they're his largest campaign contributors....oH and tax and spend will be the motto to help the illegals children become better educated in a educational system thats failed.

Grey Davis same old same old..........hiGHER TAXES mORE hiGHER TAXES....and spend....and spend and spend

Until CA is BANKRUPT!

Then Nevada property will start to look pretty good.

Except that Las Vegas is a Dirt Bagger Town full of Trailer Trash transinets and criminals and thats just the better class of people who live here. The krap is about to hit the fan here too.... Galhardi the Strip Club owner (LV & SD) who was caught bribing San Diego City Council men to change the Strip Club laws prohibiting touching has rolled over for the Feds and is naming names...in the Casino Industry and where the manure really stinks is that the Developers and politicans are in bed. In the 60's it was the mob and the casinos now it's the developers and politicans building houses for white flight retirees and businesses.

I must agree, it is comical. And yes, I have considered moving to CA, especially the Laguana Beach area.

Eric - FYI - Laguna Beach is the liberal alcove of Orange County.

Tabster: Vegas is no different now than L.A. in the 60s-80s. Back then the entire coastal commission was in bed with the developers. That's why there are wall-to-wall ocean-front homes in Malibu, that renders the beach "off-limits" to anyone but the owners. Also, Zev Yaroslavsky, the famed career councilman-turned-LA County supervisor was humping developers so that every corner in West L.A. would be turned into strip malls. Where you are is no great epiphany when it comes to pud-pulling between politicians and developers. Hello from CA: been there, done that...

The debate tonight is going to be very interesting - we'll see what Arnold's made of. Most wise thinking people in CA. see him as a mediocre actor w/political aspirations and no experience - and believe me, if they weren't around to see that crap once before with Reagan, surely such history has been passed down to them by their elders, for better and worse. Nonetheless, I hope A.S. studied his questions beforehand, because he's going against two career politicians (McClintock and Bustamante), who might just hand him his ass.

By the way, very few are impressed with Arnold's cabinet. Californians are too poor to care about Warren Buffet and Schultz. Arnold has set up his staff with a Polyanna wet dream comprised of rich old farts who are less in tune with CA's real issues than the Sultan of Brunei (sp?).

Of course I speak of the intelligent Californians - few of which exist any longer. Republican and Democrat alike, they'll have little choice as once again, they'll be polarized toward the far left Bustamante or far right McClintock. That is if they don't buy into the bling-bling of Schwarzenneger.

The World Socialist Website? Thom?

Sometimes it is not tyranny from the right or corruption from the left- merely non-partisan incompetence.

Very true, Moses.

All this looking out for scandal and overt corruption tends to lose sight of the forest for the trees. Maybe we just have lazy good-for-nothing bought-and-sold men and women in office...with more to come later...
