Next: A Porsche "3-Series"?
Porsche has been saying that it wants a fourth model, to bring units above 100,000/yr. Automotive News reported that Porsche management stated the fourth model will be positioned well below the current models (in price, presumably) and, citing "industry sources", reported that Porsche has been studying a four-passenger coupe and a four-passenger sedan.
If all of this is true, sounds like the next Porsche will go up against the BMW 3-series. In the past, Porsche built various prototype family four-seaters - stretched 911s and stretched 928s. After launching a V-6 SUV, a sub-$40K coupe/sedan wouldn't be that much of a surprise.

I prefer they made a sedan vs. the SUV they have out there.
BTW: it isn't much fun driving with one of those on the track (DE event at Lime Rock last weekend). It is very difficult to see the passing signal (hand out the window) of the driver, since he's head and shoulders above everyone else! On the plus side, it is nice to walk all over a car with twice the horsepower as you.... ![]() -Z.

Is this what Porsche will want to compete with next?

Oh come on, guys! I agree it's not the "best" of ideas, but when's the last time an enthusiast operated a car company?
It's the bottom line. BMWs to Porsches in L.A. is like 12-to-1. Everyone and their mother drives a Beemer, 3-series being the most common. As for the Cayenne, yeah, it's not a traditional Porsche, but I've sure seen a lot of them on the street around here. Looks like the company's doing well with them, at least regionally.

Well, we've got the 3 series (356)... and Porsche did experiment with making a 4 door version - the Beutler. I think 3 are still "alive".

I'd love to see Porsche build a bare-bones sports car and price it under $30K. Make it mid-engine and have at the VW parts bin. Use the 1.8T engine and keep everything else simple. Think Elise or 914.
oh well, back to my crack pipe.
