$200k to spend. Which car to get? All welcome!

Not a joke. Having a drink with a buddy last night and discussing the fact that he has decided to quit Formula Mazda Racing. I instanly realize he needs some other 4-wheeled stimulation so I ask "what addition will you be making to your garage?" He gives this Big A$$ grin and says "maybe a Lambo or Ferrari or kick ass Porsche.....I'm willing to go to about $200k on it, what should I get?" Then I get the Big A$$ grin....

Cars that were brought up were:

- Z06
- Porsche GT2 or 3 (wasn't sure of the pricing on the GT2)
- Enzo (Can't go that high but would be nice)
- Dino 246 GT
- 360 Spider (Friend has one he may sell)
- Cobra replica (Must be turn key)
- Mclaren (Too much but had to talk about it)
- Bugatti (?)

He doesn't want to restore a car but get something that he can jump in and drive....newer, reliable, stock and possibly collectable will most likely win out. BTW, he has a few other cars so this is a trophy car for him to enjoy on weekends or as a fun ride to his shore house. He'd probably consider tracking it occasionally....insurance is not an issue for him.

So what do you guys think? Anything exotic come to mind?Suggestions and pics welcome.

GT3.

73 RS....A lot of bang for the buck
Daytona...more bang for the buck
Bentley Continental used...
Or better yet tell your buddy to buy a 73S...40K tops...put the rest into a good quality stock and in a few years money won't matter. It surprised me what a million in Microsoft in 1990 is worth today $30,000,000.00.

Thanks for the ideas. Which Daytona Tabs? The infamous late 60's - early 70's Ferrari? (Is there another besides the Dodge? lol)

GT3....could be a serious contender. BTW, the Carrera GT came up but at $400k + looks doubtfull...in fact the local dealer said the price hasn't been released...lol. If you have to ask......la la la.

Fortunately for him his money situation is pretty damned good right now.

GT3.

Tabs: As much as you like the 911RS (and I like them too!) They will never have as much value as, say, a Ferrari Daytona.

For $200k, I'd say get a GT3-R with all the spares (extra engine, extra wheels & tires) and all the trimings (Color coordinated tow vehicle & enclosed trailer with awning...etc). Yeah, that would keep me happy!

Nobody ever has enough money.... theres always a little something thats just beyond our reach.....

A Ferrari Daytona might eat you outa house and home...but it won't depreciate....

Maybe it's time just to sit down and think of what car he always really wanted to have...so that when he's old and grey he can say yeah I had one of those....

Good approach. I'll have to ask and see what he says. He'll most likely pull the trigger quickly as he just booted a problematic girlfriend. He's looking for distraction.

Bright orange Miura S.

...That would be my vote...won't attract the attention of every idiot on the road...yet those who know what it is would take a second look...servicable and you can get parts/upgrades/whatever (unlike the Italian equivalent)...and if I had $200K I wouldn't buy a GM product, Z06 Vette or not...

Scion B. Now that's a hot ride.

Seriously, though, I'd get a 993-TT and buy property with the rest. I'm obviously in a slightly different financial universe than your friend. :)

Late 60s GT40. If that's too old, howabout the new one.

Then go have some Ferraris for lunch, 60s LeMans style.

If he's going to spend $200k on a Z06, he'd be crazy not to take it to John Lingenfelter. ;)

Why not a Lotus Elise (track car), with the Integra Type-R motor in it and a nice street car?

I'd go with twin turbo RUF, or kick in some extra bucks and get a Saleen.

Hell, for that sorta money he can have my SC.

I think a race spec GT3 would be a good car to have. One of the last with the real 911 engine.

I saw that one! Drooldrooldrool.

My favorite quote from R&T about the Miura:

"If you don't like this one, find a new hobby."

I go for GT40...new or old

Miura is nice too...but is a little to exotic to keep running.

Sir how many times have you bin in the shop this week?

MIura owner: Two

Ah sir how many ahh times have you driven your Miura this week

Miura ower: Two

I see.....

RickM 09-24-2003 06:03 AM

All good suggestions! Thanks guys....keep the suggestions coming.

Thae Saleen is nice but more than the $200k mark.

The GT-40 is one car that escaped the list. Damn, I've always loved that car....I'll have to see what he thinks. Are the new ones available yet and at what price?

Tabs, you're most likely right....even if the Miura is one of the few true automotive icons.
