My 911 is non union...

Okay, since the MTA transit strike, traffic down here has been abominable. I'm all for fair compensation and such - because after all, everything is about compensation, right? But please, the gridlock, especially in the by-late 100+ degree weather we've had is nearly unbearable. I'm hardly able to get over 40 mph, and it takes me almost an hour to drive six or seven miles.

I'm not *****ing. Okay, yes, I am *****ing.

maybe that's why I'm suddenly more interested in the fact that there might be a job for my wife up in Hillsboro/Portland...

But the bus and train drivers that push a button to go are highly skilled workers! Just like the grocery checkers.... While justifiable at one time, unions are pathetic these days.

I'm 3rd generation SoCal...kinda hard to leave. But so far it sounds like suburban Portland is a pretty mellow place and a good place to raise a kid. And maybe a little lower stress.

And if the housing market stays strong here, it looks like we'd have a seriously small mortgage for a bigger house and much bigger lot. I think the lot would be a lot wetter though...

40MPH in gridlock? Here in Metro Detroit that's speeding. It can easily take an hour to go 3-4 miles here. It's either an accident, stupid gawkers, or perpetual construction - usually they all happen at the same spot. M-dot seems to think that taking a 3-4 lane highway down to 1 lane is a workable thing .... ugh!

Supermarket strike

Messing with their pensions is one thing - but most people are paying for health care these days. I think their Union is causing more harm than good. These people make good money for a relatively unskilled position. I know lots of people that would be happy to work for $15/hr (double+ holiday) and pay an extra $15/week (or whatever that works out to) for health care.

Starting to hear grumbling from workers - crossing the picket lines - strike or not they have families to support. Guess two Ralphs workers beat a temp with a baseball bat yesterday in Chula Vista. Plus, locals are getting fed up supporting the strike by driving to 3 different stores to get their shopping done. This does not look good the strikers.

$15? I've heard $27 in some cases. Jeez, if that's for unskilled labor, I've got to lose some skills.
