Pitfall (the original--the sequels failed to capture the charm of the original) and Space Invaders are way up there.

Defender and Stargate kicked ass.

Centipede sucked too many of my quarters away.

We had an Odyssey2--I played "UFO!" a lot.

Ahh, the good ol' days, when gameplay and fun took precedence over gee-whiz graphics and lousy voice-acting.

I didn't play many arcade games growing up, because a quarter seemed like big money.

When I did play, I headed for the JOUST machine!

You just can't beat knocking guys off birds with sticks.

How retro? Arcade:
Defender and Galaga were huge favorites, as was Donkey Kong (though I got bored w/ that pretty quickly - I felt like Sisyphus after a couple of hours).
Slightly newer - Dragon's Lair (that was video crack) and Spy Hunter (Peter Gunn!)

As for PC:
Zork, hands-down the most fun, crazy PC game ever (I write this after a weekend of twelve hours of Max Payne 2 at 1600x1200).
The text HHGTTG was *almost* as good as Zork -- funnier, but not as cool in its uniqueness.
Prince of Persia was one of the only platform games I ever liked; well, that and Castlevania (but that might not be retro enough).

I can't wait to read what others put forth ... I'm sure there're a lot of cool games I've forgotten about.

EDIT -- Damn! Joust! I knew I'd be reminded of some cool games.

My favorites:
Zaxxon (figures I'd like a game starting with the letter 'Z')
Millipede (Centipede was just too slow after playing Millipede)
Donkey Kong
Moon Patrol
Ms. Pac-Man
Galaga
After-Burner
Out-run
Spy Hunter

(I have most of these games for my PC or GB-A)

I liked Stargate ( like Defender) and Crazy Climber plus Spy Hunter was good, Joust, Robotron, Galaga and Hyper Olympics plus more and Pinball too!

As for the MAME, jeeze that looked complicated. Anyone here use it?

On a side note there are all kinds of these machines and parts on Ebay.

Spy Hunter kicked ass, I forgot about that one.

Joust and Zaxxon were also big quarter-suckers.

For some reason I liked the Star Wars wireframe pseudo-3d game (the Death Star one).

Dragon's Lair was fun a few times but got old--it's that gameplay thing I was talking about.

MAME isn't that complicated IF you have the ROM images (note this is illegal if you don't own the particular machine for each ROM image!). I do not condone illegal possession of ROMs!

Most implementations of MAME have a GUI wrapped around them so it's pretty easy to setup and run.

A few years ago, there were CD-rom games from the companies that you could buy for your PC. I have Williams Aracade classics 1 & 2, some of the Atari games, and some of the Microsoft ones. All in all, I have about 30 or so arcade/console games for my PC. (Some of the games I have are: Moon Patrol, Spy Hunter, Burger Time, Bubbles, Root Beer Tapper, Defender I & II, Joust I & II, Super Break out, Pong, various Pac-Mans, Dig Dug, Pole Position, Millipede, Cenitpede, Dragon's Lair, Pitfall, Mouse Patrol? (That game with you hopping around the house being chased by small cats)...) and the list goes on.

You may still find some in the heavily discounted bins at Wall-Mart & CompUSA.

Yes, I am a product of the 80's!

Root Beer Tapper -- OMFG I played that game for hours! You just got into the zone and your eyes didn't even focus any more.

Dig Dug was a blast also. There was another game I had for the ][e that involved drilling and having to retract the drill to avoid the enemies -- wow, too many bourbons separate me and my youth to remember the name of it, but it was another basic, monochrome game that was a whole lot of fun.

I played a ton of Tai Pan, until it got to the point where my one ship was up against more vessels than had ever existed in all armadas in history, combined.

I have a lot of fun nowadays on PopCap -- SevenSeas, Atomica, etc. Just simple, entertaining games. Crap, I can waste 30 minutes on SFCave at any given moment -- I have earned my handle.

You and me both.

I just bought a couple game packs for my GameBoy Advanced SP, so while Im sitting up doing my Spot Call for NFR next month, I have something to do.

Those 80`s games are just as good now, as they were back then.

Yes they did, back then, when I was a teen, I could, on 1 quarter, turn over the score on Asteroids.
