Football, baseball, professional wrestling and golf are hardly state-sponsored soporifics in the way the ancient Roman games were.
The very phrases "to keep the populace occupied" and the "masses are kept in a permanent stupor" bespeaks a vast elite conspiracy to keep the masses opiated -- not self-inflicted distraction. I just got back from iaido class....THAT'S a martial pleasure.
