That's cool. I seem to remember an article in a magazine many years ago about a Golf with 928 running gear in it. They had actually widened the body out - it looked awesome!

Yes, I remember that too: was it in Grassroots? Maybe EVO.

I would have used an 84 body! I always loved the GTI.

"If you want to fly, fly GTI"

For those of you that remember that commercial.

No A/C, no Sun Roof, no power windows. Fast and light, just the way I like it. (Sad to say, it's sold. But at least it remains with us on this board.)

I think it was Road and Track. Something tells me 1978, but wasn't that the year the 928 came out? Otherwise, early '80s.

Yes, they widened a 2-door Rabbit (or Golf) and stuck the entire drivetrain and engine from a 928 inside it. I can't remember any test results, but safe to say, the car was probably quite fast.

The first to do that were Porsche themselves. I seem to recall they used a MK1 Golf to test the V8 before the 928 was launched.....Must have scared a few drivers at the time.

Then a Swiss guy, Franco Sbarro did the same, had to widen the shell and get custom front and rear screens for the car.

He also built a mid-engined Golf Mk1 with a 930 engine instead of the rear seats. Installed a hydraulic pack to 'spilt' the car open to get to the engine.
