Your dream government.....

I just had this idea today since we represent a pretty broad political spectrum on this board, not to mention many different nationalities. We tend to get into some heated discussions as well, which I think is very healthy for a democratic society. God only knows how many people have died for our right to argue, and I reject the notion that there is anything unpatriotic about criticizing our leaders.

One problem, however, is the old "tone issue", when it gets too nasty minds slam shut on both sides.

I remember a while back when a conservative member of the board said that his idea of what government should be was just the post office and the military, (a pretty extreme example of small government, but I respect his opinion and his right to voice it), I think that it is fair to say that most people expect a little more from their govt., ie. social security, national parks, INS, etc., etc....

As an experiment, I'd like to invite anyone who wishes to describe their idea of a 'close to perfect government'. Can be for whatever country they live in. Many of us are rightfully accused of complaining w/o offering solutions, or just expressing our disgust w/ certain leaders. Here is an opportunity to dream a little. We are supposedly a nation of idealists, and I'm sure that the rest of the world is too. I will contribute to this, but I need a little time to coalesce my many thoughts on this. Fire away!

Denis, until I can properly word my real answer, have you (or anyone else) seen "Equilibrium" or "Farenheit 451"? It seems to be where we're all headed. Certainly not in my lifetime, but I worry about my grandkids (who are at least 50 years away!).

I think that the US and many other democratic republics are on the right path but are all cursed with inequaties, imperfections and corruption.

First off as far as the inequalities go, I think the best place to take care of these is making sure that every person should have the right to a full and top notch education. For too many people in far to many nations this is a near impossibility due to economic reasons. The fact that our own country, touted as the best in the world by many citizens have schools that resemble crumbling prisons that don't even have needed supplies for its students speaks volumes about such problems.

As far as imperfections and corruption go, they need to be corrected with extreme prejudice. When you look at everything from the dot.com scam to enron and the crooked corporate owned policians who serve and facilitate their needs I don't need to write a book on where reform needs to start.

Well thats it in a nutshell, but there are a lot of details and second level problems that I don't have the time to go into now.

I'm sure we will have a few other progressive thinkers on the board add to these obvious facts.

Ah, but that's what the ruling class fears the most; an uneducated populace is more easily controlled by simplistic talk radio show hosts and placated by ESPN and 'reality TV'.

While maybe we have not yet perfected the "perfect form of government" I think we have the correct parts. We can endlessly discuss our current government's success and failures but for all it's warts, it has been pretty stable for over 200 years. How many other governments can say that?

My concepts of a good government are:

-A place where no one is above the law.
-A place where the people, collectively, make the laws.
-An educated populance
-Protection from foreign invaders.
-Freedom to speak your mind.
-Freedom to practice religion as you see fit.
-Freedom to be left alone.
-Ability to practice ones trade and seek leisure activity with minimal interference unless it impinges on others rights as listed above.
-A government committed to vigorously enforcing the above.

Of course we are; three-piece suits went out in the 90's.

I'm a radical. I believe a person should be able to keep half of what he earns. I think personal freedoms should not be restricted unless they interfere with another persons liberty or safety.

I believe a large displacement engine swap makes better sense than a rebuild. I believe that with few exceptions, men look silly in Spandex. I believe beer should generally be brown rather than yellow.

I'm your candidate and I appreciate your support.
