Hope you Southern Cali guys / gals are ok

Just heard the Earth moved under your feet. The site is up (although seems slow) so it must not have been too bad.

Here in Orange County, I didn't feel a thing. Seems like it was more of a Central California thing, decreasing a lot towards the South.

Earthquake? What earthquake? No worries, they are more frequent than rain, rain is scary!

My parents in Santa Barbara sure felt it. Center was ~170 miles NW of Los Angeles - 6.5 is the preliminary estimate. Damage reports are probably on the way.

I just felt a minor quake, and I'm in NoCal. Was there a large quake?

I just found some info. Looks like it was a magnitude 6.5, near San Simeon. Thats at least 150 miles from here, and I definitely felt it.

I felt it here in Long Beach (250 miles from epicenter), slow rocking back and forth, lasted at least 15 seconds. I posted about it, but I did it on the OT board jk BTW, just found this article from Rueters, http://biz.yahoo.com/rc/031222/energy_quake_refineries_1.html they are about as accurate as the weekly world news. The Wilmington refinery is where I'm at right now (don't tell my boss). They must be talking about the refinery in Benicia Ca. (400 miles from here) Last edited by sammyg2; 12-22-2003 at 11:12 AM..

Any news would be great. I have family members in San Luis Obispo and I can't get through on the phone. Thanks!

SLO should be okay -- plenty of miles from the epicenter. But i felt it as a 'seasick' rolling motion 200 miles away. Bad news is that USGS says it may be a "pre-quake". :-O

My wife said she felt it (she works in north OC), but there was nothing in south county (San Juan Capistrano) where I work. I hope it wasn't just a pre-quake!

Studio City in the San Fernando Valley - it was a long rolling motion for about 30 seconds...

SLO should be okay -- plenty of miles from the epicenter. SLO is only 30 miles from the epicenter, but I appreciate your enthusiasm. I too think everything should be okay, it would be nice to confirm though.

Scott, No reports of injuries, as would be the norm w/ earthquakes here. Phone lines might be disrupted, however, probably w/ people trying to call their friends and relatives to make sure that all is well. A pre-quake?? I don't think that they are very good at predicting quakes around here, and I have never heard of a whopper quake being proceeded by a 6.5. Anything is possible I guess.

Would now be a good time to remind those in earthquake land of garage safety? After the Whittier Narrows quake I went to the garage and found an entire shelving system had fallen over on my pick up truck including at least 100 cans of everything you can imagine from paint to solvent. The shelves weren't tied to the wall and it didn't take much to tip it over. Some flammable stuff had spilled onto the ground after the containers split open. Could have caused a fire instead of just some paint damage to the truck. Now all my shelves are bolted to the walls. Lucky me, I didn't have a 911 at the time.

I sure as hell felt it, our 16 floor office building was rocking for over a minute (building is on rollers). I'm in Torrance, I was sitting in a conference call and felt my motion sickness coming on, when I looked at my window the blinds were rocking. I was under my desk for the rest of the conference call. Cheers, Grind
