this 16-year-old kid that i work with just bought (or was bought) a Honda Civic, and he immediately put on the jeweled/clear tail-lights. I couldn't resist. I said to him, now I don't get it... do you think that looks good, or does it represent something else...?

His answer was, yes, he thinks it looks good (!!!!) and the main reason for doing it was to "stand out," "individualize his car," so that "everyone knows it's his and not just a stock Civic."

So I 1) Pointed out to him the five other Civics/Accords/CRXs/DelSols in the parking lot that have the same tail-lights, all owned by 16-19 year-old males 2) said to him, "if you really want to stand out, leaving the STOCK tail lights probably would have been better..." and 3) told him if you REALLY want to stand out, try driving something a little less common than a Civic.

I'm sure the reason that he bought the car was because it is THE "import racer" (and his parents could afford it and approved of buying such a thrifty car), but the reason HE gave for driving a Civic was that "not everyone has the money to buy Porsches."

You should have seen his face drop when I told him that you could buy a sweet 944 for under $5000, a great 944 Turbo for under $10K, and even a good used 911 Carrera/SC for less money than his Civic.
