NASA saved face.....

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=1&u=/ap/20040104/ap_on_sc/mars_rover_47

they FINALLY had a "succesful" mission to mars, and their rover is sending back pics
i wonder how tense the room really was until the first contact with the rover was achieved

Ho hummm ...... so what? We landed on Mars. That rates back page coverage these days.

I grew up in the 60's during the height of the moon race. In grade school, they would roll TV's (black & white!!) into all the classrooms every time a rocket blasted off. It was a HUGE deal. We would all sit there in amazement. We would draw charts and maps and study exactly how they could accomplish this stuff. And then when they finally landed on the moon, it was unreal.

Now? Seems like nobody really cares. We're more concerned with what Ozzie Osborne and Anna Nichole Smith are doing to be bothered with these things ..... It would do our kids a world of good to promote the ***** out of this technological accomplishment in the classroom. The reality today is they will probably be taught that this is a waste of money when we could be spending it on another food stamp program .......

It's not a waste of money or time. In fact, it is very important because Earth is becoming vastly overpopulated and its resources running thin. Not to mention, there is a strong curiousity factor about what else is out there.

If at all, it's like introducing yourself to your neighbors: it's a good thing to know who you can run to or rely on when your own home has a problem, such as catching fire, for example.

the British Beagle 2 lander, is the lander which has not been heard from. NASAs mars missions have been very successful. (especially considering there are no service stations along the way)

So now what's this about a senseless war between Ozzie Osborne and Anna Nichole Smith? . . . are they neighbors?

Except for the Mars Climate Orbiter...a rather high-profile goof: http://clive.canoe.ca/CNEWSHeyMartha9911/10_metric.html

As if I need to prove my point , I did a Google search. Here's the predictable results:

NASA Spirit Rover = 133
Ozzie Osborne = 2,430
Anna Nicole Smith = 351,000

Beam me to Mars .........

Unless Lucas "The Lord Of Darkness" doesn't do it first...

(British rover was probably powered by Lucas electricals, that's why it's not answering)

P.S.
NASA landed on mars already 1976 with it's "Viking" lander...Soviet landed on Venus (!!) and sent live pictures, impressing feat considering 200 grades centigrade temperature and 60 bar sulphure-atmosphere.

I always marvel at the "We should spend that money here on earth". Gee, I didn't realize they stuffed the probes with cash... Who do these folks think gets this money? These companies employ scientists, maintenance people, support staff, and all these people shop at the local Piggly Wiggly (or equivalent), pay taxes, spending this "wasted" money and helping the stores maintain staff, which in turn, helps suppliers keep their employees paid and happy...The good old multiplier effect at work. I would rather see people work and earn their way (those that are able) than give out freebies to those who can work but do not wish to. Try explaining this to your friends who think that all scientific exploration is wicked and wasteful.....especially those with pacemakers and GPS devices, not to mention satellite TV and cellphones....

Well, I ask my 5th grade daughter how her first day back to school was ...... you guys talk about the Mars Rover today?? ..... "What's that?" Ahhh, we landed on Mars and are taking pictures right now ....... "Wow, that sounds cool. I don't think anybody knows about it. Maybe I could bring something in for show-and-tell". Nah, I think it's Black history month - wouldn't want to take any time away from those important studies .......

Oh P-shaw! The rocks might represent a dry lake bed, which might mean water was once there, which might mean "life" was once there.

Probably Jimmy Hoffa...
