A: The drummer.

Whatchoo talkin' about Blue? The drummer is the foundation of any great band! He is the timekeeper. Not to mention your mental and physical abilities have to be on another level. If nothing else, the drummer is definitely the most underrated musician.

nostatic 01-14-2004 08:30 PM

nope...bass is the most underrated.

bass is the fragile link between melody, harmony, and rhythm. A good bass player has to understand all three to be really effective.

Im a great natural musician who can pick up any instrument and make it work. I have a tremendous musical ear and ability to compose. This is about my only natural talent that I was born with.

My primary instrument is guitar, and I am trained in fingerstyle jazz as well as other styles (rock, pop, country etc). I have a very good, almost great voice... I dabble in keyboards and drums and could be very good on those if I had the time and inclination to work at it.

I studied music in college and can sightread (though I need some practice to get up to speed). I have written several classical and jazz compositions...

I studied studio production and have quite a few hours logged in the studio. I also have my own home computer-based studio. I worked as sales manager for 3 years for a leading digital audio company and met many insiders in the industry.

I have the basis of a great rock album which I have been working on for the past several years. Basically, other than some of the lyrics...the music is all done. I could record it in a week...but I am too much of a goddamn perfectionist. This is my problem, I am a psycho perfectionist and borderline manic depressive when it comes to analyzing this stuff. It drives me crazy....which is why I have never persued Music or production as a career.

This is my biggest problem. I need therapy really.

I think it's the tambourine player.

Sonic dB 01-14-2004 09:02 PM

nostatic...have you played on any releases that I may have heard? You are an LA studio cat...right?

Sorry to hear about your arthritis. Thats a bummer. :(

dd74 01-14-2004 09:47 PM

I heard somewhere that good musicians are also very good mathematicians.

(I've also heard good spellers are also more often than not unemployed...:( )

Is any of that true?

Doubtful. A couple of asian market releases and a small independent college jazz band thing. I do music on the side, but I've been gigging on and off since the late 70's. I think I could do the studio thing (my sightreading chops are a bit rusty, but nothing some serious 'shedding couldn't fix), but I get paid too much money for not working that hard right now. All the musicians I know work waaay to hard to make a decent living.

If I get burned out maybe I'll do the studio thing as a next career.

For some reason I can play the drums good with no leasons. I never play them though. My dad was the drummer in band called Morningstar in the late 70's -early 80's. Anybody heard of them?

tabs 01-15-2004 01:14 AM

I play with myself does that count?

Can't play an instrument to save my life, but love music. My talent as most of you know resides with words. I know the hooks and know how to rent space in your heads. My realm is that of imagination, thats why I am a man of wealth and taste.

I can't spell worth ***** and I'm unemployed, Music is mathematics.

adrian jaye 01-15-2004 03:45 AM

What you need is a producer if these decisions are paralyzing you. This is actually a common theme among talents. Don't forget that 99.9% of the stuff you are worrying about, people don't give one **** of one iota about. Too perfect can be the wrong thing for what you're trying to achieve.

Yeah just look at Keith Richards....it seems he built a career on not being perfect....

Im a player.

I mainly play guitar, but can play bass, drums, trumpet, trombone, etc.

Been playing with instruments since I was 4 or so, 35 now.

But I also work in Event Production, which puts me onstage for almost any band you can name, and it has for over 15 years. I just wish I had more time to play with a band of some sort, instead of running the stage.,.,.,maybe one day.

Man, I feel your pain here... I finally realized my dream by coming to work at a recording studio, but the combination of the fact that I've got the studio booked every day for the next three months and the fact that I'm working so much keeps me from using the facilities. It's an enjoyable and simultaneously ****ty situation.

It must be frustrating concentric . Having all that gear, at your finger tips, and you cant dabble. I would be climbing the walls. But in due time, you will get yours.

I love my job, there have been a couple of times to where I was allowed to pick up a guitar, or bass, or get behind the drumset of a band, to do sound check, in a 20,000 set arena. AWWWWWW, the loadness was beautiful.

speeder 01-17-2004 11:21 AM

I whistle...... :)

Q:"What do you call a musician w/o a girlfriend?"

A: "Homeless."
