Music, what do you do?

Just curious...
How many Pelicanites are musically inclined? What do you play or where does your enthusiasm lie?

I'm a guitar player that's been hacking for about 10 years now, I have a fairly nice home studio, and I run a recording studio.
I did electronic music for about 5 years, programming and performance.

I'm also a music collector and have a fairly large collection of CDs and vinyl.

Rock on,

Jason

I noodle around with a Guitar. Play the bass a little as well. I can find middle C and figure chords on a piano, but cant play anything other than the intro to 'Dream On'. Ive never had to play to pay the bills though.

I absolutely love music but apparently don't have a musical bone in my body. Several years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and took some lessons - after 2 months even the instructor said I sucked. Now the guitar sits in the attic. :( I would love to be able to play the darn thing. I also suck at dancing.

(did i say that outloud?)

Screw that guy. It's all about whether or not you get enjoyment from the instrument. I'm a decent player, but I know session guys and some of my friends that make me look like a tone-deaf quadripeligic. That's never stopped me from picking up the guitar.

I urge you to continue if it interests you.

Man, I'd LOVE to play the guitar! Parents wouldn't send me to lessons since I was so "active"...they were probably right. My sister went and she became very proficient. Damn her ;-)

Man, that could have been your problem....aren't you supposed to "blow" a trombone? :D

Randy!

Actually, I studied piano years ago. Man, I wish I kept that up. They say it's the root for all other instruments, but I haven't figured out why yet.

BlueSkyJaunte 01-14-2004 01:31 PM

Lessee.....

I've got a bunch of guitars. I suck at playing all of them. My guitar teacher was great, though. He was in an Elvis cover band.

For 7 years I took piano lessons from a concert pianist who frequently played at Carnegie Hall. Didn't learn a damn thing. Still try to hammer out some Beethoven on the baby grand occasionally. The dog usually leaves the room.

Played the B-flat cornet and the trumpet in band. Moved to the trombone because we didn't have enough 'bones but more than enough trumpets.

I also occasionally annoy my wife by playing the "Hobbit Theme" from LOTR on my Native American flute. (http://www.ec-securehost.com/BlackArrowIndianArt/Flutes_by_Odell_Borg.html)

Oh, and vocally, I'm a bass. Crash Test Dummies guy, eat your heart out!

Most likely because it's the most convenient and visual representation of the interval relationships that comprise music theory. It's also very, very versatile in the types of sounds you can create with it.

I've always wanted to play the drums. Does that imply some personality trait? Seems like everyone wants to play the guitar. Otherwise, I'm not musically inclined by any means.

Q: What do you call a guy that hangs out with a band?
A: The drummer.

Jared at Pelican Parts 01-14-2004 02:30 PM

I've played guitar for 17 years.

Played in a few bands

I was a musician for 34 years up until Sunday afternoon. After rehearsal (arranging tunes for studio time at the end of the month to cut an EP), my left hand started hurting to the point that I couldn't even brush my teeth.

Saw the doc yesterday...arthritis. Luckily it isn't too bad yet. It feels a lot better today, so I might be able to play for a few minutes tonight. So I suppose I still am a musician, but that made for a very depressing couple of days. Now I have to start paying attention and do ice, anti inflammatory meds, brace, etc.

getting old sucks.

BlueSkyJaunte 01-14-2004 02:42 PM

That sucks, Todd. I've been fighting carpal tunnel in both wrists for the past 8 years. Lots of NSAIDs and braces are the only advice I can give you. :(

You know, I listened to your mp3s on nostatic.fm and was impressed. You have good feel. I'm sure you will shred again. Just stay vigilant and think positive.

I heard the lead singer from "C-T Dummies" smoked three packs a day to get his voice that low...
