Best donuts?

The reason I ask is, I was wearing a Krispy Kreme t-shirt the other day (here in New Zealand) and this American guy just went nuts. He wanted to know where to buy them and was jumping up and down on the spot with excitement, when I told him it was a gift from a friend in the US and, no, we don't have them here, he set about telling me everything there was to know about Krispy Kreme donuts. I said "Arn't Dunkin Donuts the best", just to wind him up, and I got another 5 minutes on the virtues of Krispy Kreme donuts, LOL.

KK is the best, for store bought.....

nostatic 01-30-2004 02:25 PM

my wife claims that the best donuts are from a small shop in Webster MA, run by a Greek family. I walked in, couldn't get past the cigarette smoke smell, and lost my appetite for donuts.

KK is mostly hype. And air. And sugar...lots of sugar. Not that that's bad or anything...

jrdavid68 01-30-2004 02:28 PM

Come on guys, KK is so last year!

that is funny. i am actually a cookie guy.

jrdavid68 01-30-2004 02:40 PM

KK - too much sugar, too many bad carbs.

Bring on the Pork Rinds and avocodo dip!

ZAMIRZ 01-30-2004 02:41 PM

i agree with nostatic, kk is mostly hype. The best donut I've ever had was from the Schatz Bakery in Bishop, CA.

widebody911 01-30-2004 02:50 PM

KK is complete hype. The best dounuts come from the little podunk mom-and-pop shops.

and it's wondered why the American tourist gets such a bad rap.... :(

Ah, the foundation of the Atkins diet.

vash 01-30-2004 03:58 PM

not a big fan of the pork rind. my saliva glands are not up to the task of moisture control. but with beer.....and hot sauce.

When I has in high school we'd go into KK about 1:00am and each of us would order a dozen. They'd go in the back and get 'em right off the line, still warm. We finish off a dozen in about 8 minutes. It was great to be young.:D

No $hit, Randy.

Bill Douglas 01-30-2004 06:53 PM

Randy, the guy was a good laugh, and it's so nice to see people passionate about something even if it is donuts, LOL (and we love Americans coming out here!).

I'm dying to try them now, especially if they are loaded with sugar!

Around here the best ones are from Mom and Pop type bakeries, and the worst ones are from the supermarkets, yuck.

There was a huge hype a year or so ago in the Bay Area about the first and only Krispy Kreme opening in the Palo Alto(?) area.

A few weeks after hearing about it daily on the local news the line of cars into the parking lot was still all the way around the block.
After spending hours to get nasty, oil-soaked little pieces of turd, I was a little disappointed. So were a lot of people because a few months later the place was deserted(!) on a sunday morning.
The best places are the mom-and-pops.

vash 01-30-2004 07:53 PM

bill douglas, do you think they would make it through the mail? they would probably be small round bricks by the time they got there.

rammstein 01-30-2004 09:25 PM

Best donuts are donuts that are still warm from the fryer. oooooohh.... mmmmmm.

power 01-30-2004 09:34 PM

In Canada you can always tell a great doughnut shop by how many RCMP cruisers are parked outside.......Tim Hortons ranks pretty high....but I keep driving by a KK sign that has the number of days till opening on it...26 was the last I saw.....Free trade is great.

Malasadas from O'ahu!

Moses 01-31-2004 06:55 AM

Donut? Give me a Beignet at Cafe du Monde. Hot, sugary goodness.
